Dating back to 1807 and the only remaining signal tower in North America, the Portland Observatory is one of the most iconic and historic structures in the city. This seven-story red-brick building offers panoramic views of the city, the Portland Harbor and the Atlantic ocean in the distance. Guided tours are conducted every day and give you an insight into the history, culture, and workings of the city in the early days. The Observatory is extremely interesting and a must-visit when in the city.

tripadvisorWell worth the stop but I would not go out of my way just for this. Efficient process, brief lines, knowledgeable staff, great view, quiet quick elevator. Fort was fascinating considering the planning it took to build it so many years ago.
MoreIt was very cool weather! This is a guided tour. Plan in advance, because tours sale out. I got there and it was 11:00 am. The next slot for a tour would be 2:00 pm.
MoreBeautiful 360 view from the top. Nice tour and history. 10 PA and 5PK
MoreAmazing views of Portland and its surrounding waters from historic restored wooden observatory tower. With docent-led tour, you get to climb to the very top, as well as learn about area history from docent and exhibits.
MoreWe enjoyed our docent led tour in the Portland Observatory. Our recently retired docent was excellent, animating the history in an interesting way. Once at the top, we enjoyed the Portland views for a good amount of time (10-15 minutes). Would recommend doing this to start your day when visiting Portland.
