Court Square Park

Court Square is a historic park that has existed at least since 1876, when the statue of Hebe was dedicated here. This small oasis in the middle of downtown office buildings also features a delightful gazebo and a bronze fountain. Court Square appeared in the movie The Firm as a backdrop for a meeting between Tom Cruise and Gene Hackman, and in real life serves as a relaxing spot for local office workers and visitors alike, who enjoy watching the restored antique cars of the Main Street Trolley go by.

Remember the backdrop of the park and fountain that set the stage for a meeting between Tom Cruise and Gene Hackman in the 1993 movie The Firm? That was Court Square in Memphis, Tennessee. Laid out by city planners in 1819, located between Main and Second Streets at Court Avenue, this quiet oasis is surrounded by office buildings and busy streets and offers a shady area with fountains, statues, a gazebo and places to relax and enjoy the restored antique trolleys going by on Main Street amid the hustle and bustle of downtown Memphis. Ironically, the land was set aside to build a courthouse. But it wasn't built. Instead, the site was home to Memphis' first schoolhouse. The centerpiece of Court Square is the Hebe Fountain, which was erected in 1876 in the center of the park. In Greek mythology, Hebe was the Cupbearer to the Gods. The light display at night is especially beautiful. The fountain is made of cast iron and is 20 feet high with a diameter of 35 feet and weighs 7,000 pounds. In 1982, Court Square was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Since I was staying in a hotel downtown and had business there as well, I could not miss this pretty square in the center. Nice fountain and there were places for coffee nearby.

Nice park in the daytime. A wedding took place in the park late Saturday afternoon. But both Friday and Saturday night/early Saturday and Sunday morning there was a crowd of people with very loud music that lasted for hours.

We enjoyed this green oasis in the middle of city buildings. Easy access to the trolley and carriages as well as local restaurants and hotels.

It is a nice small green area among the high buildings for sitting and taking a rest after strolling around on the main street. Sometimes you also find a foodtruck where you can have some drink etc.
