Knowing I like to visit historic places, a friend sent me a picture of a slide from an extension class she is taking that listed the oldest churches in Maryland. Though the Friends Burial Ground was 'only' the fifth oldest, being established in 1713, it was the closest for me. It may be the oldest in Baltimore. The 8-foot high stone walls are a later addition and are easily visible on the west side of Harford Road just a few blocks from North Avenue. In keeping with Quaker tradition, the gravestones are very low and simple. There are over 1800 graves with the oldest from 1740s. Parking is a big challenge, but one can manage street parking. Shade trees are plentiful. The property also includes two-story stone Sexton’s House. The Friends Burial Ground was added to the National Register of Historic Places as seen on a plaque at the gate.
