National Archives at Kansas City Library ·$

This institution is one of 13 different archival centers that house Federal documents in-perpetuity for the United States. Here, visitors can come for free and peruse the exhibits, learn about how documents are archived, you can even come and find long-lost relatives in their genealogy record archive. However, this particular center holds the documents from the following states only: Missouri, Kansas, Iowa, South Dakota, North Dakota, Minnesota and Nebraska. So if you live in any one of these states and are so inclined, take some time to learn a little about your particular state from the federal perspective.

The National Archives doesn't get the attention it deserves, but it's a cool place. Last year I went to see a movie here on gender equality and got to see part of the place as I walked back to the area the film was being shown. It was a nice space for the movie, but walking along the halls I got to see some of the other cool stuff. Normal hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. They offer free guided tours that last 45 minutes, but do call 2 weeks in advance to schedule them. There is extensive microfilm holdings of value for genealogy research, and information on closed business and personal bankruptcy case files, and civil and criminal case files from Federal courts in Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska. Even just the photos and descriptions you will find on the walls are interesting, this is a cool place to check out.

We were able to look at your ancestry online for free. They allowed us to print some photos. I would recommend to anyone looking for free access to their heritage.

Wonderful, informative exhibit that I believe changes. Additional photo gallery is located downstairs. My husband wanted to do some research and received lots of help and information. There is a research area with computers and an attendant to help. This is a regional collection so information he was looking for was housed in St Louis. Staff is very helpful. This is quick walk from Union Station, through the Post Office parking lot and you're there.

We made the trip to KC specifically to spend a couple days in the research room at the National Archives. We needed information from Nebraska and South Dakota and there were records that are not available online. We were able to access them. If you are doing this type of research, it is imperative that you phone first to give the archivists information on what you want to see so they can have it ready for you. It also helps to have appointments so you have a place to review the materials of interest.

This is a great place to go to begin your search on ancestry, local history, and just to see some neat things throughout the year. They have a nice gallery to walk through to learn as you go.
