Rosehill Cemetery Cemetery

This 350-acre (141 hectare) cemetery is a true monument to the past. Originally constructed in 1864 by William W. Boyington, the ornate and Gothic entrance is classified as its own historic landmark. Inside, many grand crypts pay homage to 14 Chicago mayors, Nobel Prize winner and Vice President Charles Gates Dawes and businessmen Richard Sears, Montgomery Ward, Oscar Mayer and Milton Florsheim. Rosehill is also a natural sanctuary. Every fall, Canadian geese flock in by the hundreds and several raccoons, rabbits and squirrels can be spotted here.

Zero Accountability for Severe Plot Desecration & Negligence at Rosehill CemeteryI am beyond disheartened and deeply upset by the complete lack of respect, professionalism, and common courtesy from Rosehill Cemetery. My family purchased and paid for four plots in full 26 years ago with perpetual care covered. Despite this, I have had to fight Rosehill’s management for nearly a decade just to maintain contractual integrity because of their chaotic record-keeping. This is not the first issue my family has experienced with Rosehill. In 2017, they attempted to make my family pay again for my stepbrother Kilbert Maxwell Jr.’s plot, even though it was already paid in full — confirmed in writing by former General Manager Julian Moldovan and later reaffirmed by Area Manager Steve Mize. With those confirmations on record, there should be absolutely no issues repairing the current damage to Kilbert Maxwell Sr.’s and Jerry Green’s markers due to negligence of their grounds & maintenance team. (surrounding plots that neighbor my family's plots of Jeppe & Petrovichi are also damaged/unkept which is shown in one of my photos)I am extremely upset and grieved by the persistent pattern of inadequate communication, issues with record keeping, and now physical damage to the final resting places of our loved ones.

When the conversation turns to cemeteries, most Chicagoans think of Graceland. But a little bit of research might change your mind. Rosehill, Graceland's sister cemetery, has all the trappings of Arlington National Cemetery in Washington DC and Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, Virginia. Located at 5800 North Ravenswood Avenue on the city's northwest side, in the Lincoln Square community, it is Chicago's largest cemetery with 350 acres. Founded in 1859, it is significant for several reasons. Start with Rosehill's Joliet/limestone entrance gate, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. Marvel at the Rosehill Mausoleum, the largest mausoleum in Chicago with two levels, floors of Italian Carrara marble and stained glass windows designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany. And the Horatio N. May Chapel with a blend of Gothic and Romanesque styles, a granite exterior and an interior appointed with mosaic floors. The list of distinguished burials includes several Illinois governors, Chicago mayors, generals, civic leaders, business tycoons, sports figures and celebrities. As a Civil War buff, I'm most interested in the fact that Rosehill is the burial place for 350 Union soldiers and sailors and at least three Confederates, including several members of the 8th Illinois Cavalry, which fired the first shots at Gettysburg, and General John McArthur, who helped Ulysses S. Grant avoid surrender at Shiloh. Rosehill has the distinction of being the largest private burial ground of Union veterans, including 16 generals and six drummer boys, in the state of Illinois. In fact, Rosehill opened its own Civil War museum in 1995. It highlights the roles played by generals and soldiers buried on the property and Chicago's part in the war.

This is an amazing cemetery full of history, to visit. Beautiful grounds which are maintained to be quite beautiful. The fireman's memorial, celebrating Chicago's volunteer fire fighters is quite stunning. And there is a large area at the front, with tomb stones and monuments to those who fought in the Civil War.
