Builders of churches in the U.S. in the 19th and early 20th centuries tended to borrow their designs from much older European constructions. Thus, this white stone cathedral, built in the late 1800s and early 1900s has the look of a 13th-century Gothic church from a town in Bavaria. W. Halsey Wood, the architect of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York, designed it. Look for the altar dedicated to the nurses who died after contracting yellow fever from their patients during the epidemic of 1878. Many were treated here, in the previous St. Mary's building.

tripadvisorThis is my Episcopalian home. It is beautiful inside. The Sisters of St. Mary's (yes there are Episcopal nuns) nursed victims of the yellow fever epidemic. The severity of the epidemic nearly cost the city of Memphis its charter. The sisters all succumbed to the fever, and they are honored in the Cathedral and in the adjoining Sisters Chapel.
Morewonderful church with a rich history in the community. Well kept. Enjoyed walking within this church. stained glass windows were beautiful
MoreThis church is a gem in the middle of the city. It has gorgeous stained glass all over the church. it is very much like the churches I have seen in Europe. We entered on a Sunday after service had just ended. In a funny note as we were standing there they started playing the wedding march. Funny and uncomfortable at the same time. It doesn't seem to be in the greatest neighborhood though.
MoreThis is an active, living church with a great history in civil rights. The nave, chancel and windows are outstanding. If you're here on a Sunday, join them and take a tour. They a great Canon Organist and a loose cannon music director (same guy).
MoreI have the most beautiful cathedrals in the world, and the altar at St. Mary's is perhaps the most beautiful I have seen.
