tripadvisorThis is a tough course. It added about no eight strokes to my normal score. On the other hand, it insures that you will knock the rust off of some clubs you haven't used in a while. Challenging but fun. Great staff here both on the course and in the clubhouse. Nice driving range to boot.
MoreThis was our family’s Saturday relief from the challenge of social distancing and CV-19. We wanted to get outside in a scenic area and this course matched our needs. The staff and greeting: From the initial phone call to the greeting at the clubhouse, the staff was warm and welcoming. Pace of play, with some people walking and other taking “single carts, unless family” was good for mid-day Saturday. We barely waited on just a few holes. At check in the staff suggested we take a booklet, that perfectly described each hole, since we had never played the course and it was INVALUABLE… get one, unless you are playing with a person familiar with the course. The Course: The gauntlet lives up to its name, particularly on the front nine. From hole # 1, you know this is not your typical course, with a dogleg left, with severe elevation drop that from the tee box has you thinking… which club from the bag is going to keep me on the course. Even with a good tee shot, your second shot has to hit the green and “stick” or it rolls way off the elevated green. Get ready, the first five holes, are all challenging for different reasons, elevated greens, surrounded by bunkers, or brush you have to carry, blind doglegs, or blind shot over a hill (ring the bell). More than once I was able to hit the green in regulation, just to have it roll off and down 10-20 feet from the green. The back nine is more forgiving, but still will use each club in the bag. Course and greens were in good shape with the fairways “greening up” xoisa grass? The course wraps around a big lake but you only have to worry about water on a few holes. It’s scenic and peaceful with no houses or other buildings diminishing the beauty. There was “work” done on one tee box and a couple of bunkers but overall the course was in very good shape. I drove an hour with the family to play this course and will definitely play it again. Price/value, challenge and a welcoming staff make this a gem in the Fredericksburg area.
MoreWhat a great layout just love playing this course. You basically use every club in the bag. You have so many beautiful holes if you could only get the greens right. Too many burnt out spots which makes consistent putting difficult.
MoreI live near the course and have been talking to folks in the area as well as employees at the clubhouse. There is excitement with new management at the helm and anticipation for what the course will look like this year at its prime. A complete overhaul of the course has taken way with a different (hopefully more resilient) mixture of seed being sown. The obvious effort to strategically trim and remove trees will allow more sun exposure onto the entire course which should alleviate some of the soggy and sparse areas. I'm personally looking forward to the season. The staff there is very knowledgeable and they have good deals like all courses in the area as long as pay attention to specials, emails, and hot deals on some apps.
MoreI live near the Gauntlet and have played there four times this year. Yesterday's round will be the last one this year--I'm not going back. The staff is great, the range is fine, and tee to green the course is in good shape. The greens are in atrocious condition; the worst I've ever seen on any course I've played. The recent heavy rains, drought, high humidity, and some disease have ravaged at least half of the front nine greens and ALL of the greens on the back nine. In almost all cases, there is very little grass, lots of sand, and much muddy soil. I realize that the greenskeepers must be working hard to get the course back in shape, but they have a Herculean task to get there this season.I have a recommendation (which I gave to one of the greenskeepers who came buy sampling the greens while we were on the back nine)---put in temporary greens at the end of each fairway and give the actual greens time to recover. Otherwise, buyer beware.
