Our first time here. This place is huge and has everything for the outdoors person of any age. Archery, including range, rifles and pistols, camping gear, clothing including camo, unusual candy, camping foods, a separate sunglass department, canoes, kayaks, fishing equipment, just everything. Plenty of staff to help out. Nearly endless parking and handicap accessible. Nice bathrooms. My wife bought some sunglasses, but it took her five minutes to be acknowledged, though the staffer was quite knowledgeable. Later, she returned the sunglasses, but the staffer wasn't present and no backup was there in her place. Only the Kittery Trading Post is better. Well-located near the highway, packed traffic made it difficult to get there initially. We had an interesting time in this voluminous store.

Where is a zero when you need one. I went to buy a simple rifle and showed my property tax issued by the town of kennebunkport, plus a fishing license. I am sorry to say but the staff at the hunting section in Scarborough Maine need to pass a simple IQ test prior to being hired. We'll get to that in a second. They simply cant read a government issued form and they also misinformed me about purchasing a handgun. Now I was told there were few people who purchased handguns there with fake ID's. I wonder what kind of background check they do. This concerns me deeply. Unknown to them I also used to work for the government at a high level. I am having the district attorney office conduct a review of all guns sold there for the past few years. If we find any violations I'll put most of these guys behind bars. Stop shopping there.

We went to choose a few Christmas stocking stuffers. This time around, customer service wasn't as friendly as previous times. Several clerks were dismissive or looked bored. There were long lines at the registers because there were only three manned stations. I did find a cute gift in the gourmet food gift section, although it was a little pricier than it should have been. The center taxidermy display was decorated for the holidays and was educational for those of us who don't hunt or are not that familiar with wildlife, but it's still sort of creepy and sad. We skipped the gun department.

In addition to everything else they have, Cabela's has good-quality clothing for men, women, and kids. My son is a big fan. Some of the clothing brands have built-in sunscreen protection. There are a lot of good choices for casual everyday wear as well as camping, fishing, hiking, and other outdoor activities. They have great sales, too.

I usually visit this store once or twice a year to buy gifts, and I'm always amazed by the amount and variety of merchandise here and how well displayed everything is. I bought a family member one of Cabela's Bass Pro Shops tee-shirts that he likes.
