ShopScad is an interesting gallery store that houses the creations of the students, alumni, faculty and staff of Savannah College of Arts and Design. The 1,200 square-foot retail space was founded in 2003, on the recommendations of now-President Paula Wallace. The gallery encourages submissions from various artistic fields that the college offers and houses an array of artworks and other items like jewelry, beauty products, books, handbags and clothing. The inventory is updated daily, and the store displays are unconventional. The college has opened the same concept stores in Atlanta and Lacoste as well.

I thought we were going to see and buy the best work by SCAD designers and top students. I work on ceramics so I will comment on that. Ceramics were represented by an array of mushrooms of different sizes, fine but a really overworked subject matter for ceramics going way back. There were also hand pinched small trays with a white glaze. They are nice but more basic than expected but also not finished on the bottom so the bits of clay left when the signature was scratched in would scratch a surface. Then there were multiple collections of soy candles, again fine but not the innovation I expected from a premier institution.
