The Bijou Theatre has a long and colorful history dating back to 1909. Silent films were growing in popularity and Lillian Ashmun commissioned architect Ernest G. Southey to design a movie house with a two-story ballroom above. It was common for the Bijou to offer three or four Vaudeville shows every day. The price per ticket back then? 5 cents for matinees, 10 cents for evening shows! Aside from movies, the Bijou Theatre was alive with music and dance. Peter Dawe bought the building and Daniel J. Quilty, a master dance instructor, operated his College of Dancing, bringing waltz, polka, tap and ballet lessons to the city of Bridgeport until 1950. Trends come and go, and in the second half of the 1900s the Bijou Theatre underwent different identities and was renamed The Rivoli, Downtown Cinema and then Downtown Family Cinema. One hundred years after showing its first movie, the Bijou Theatre regained its original name. Our goal now is to retain the spirit that comes with it.

tripadvisorWent to the theater's performance of Vivaldi's Four Seasons for their Candle Light series. So much fun! The entire stage and the audience table areas were full of lit candles! They looked real, but then we noticed the candles were battery powered which made sense for safety. The string quartet included 1st violin, 2nd violin, viola and cello. The cellist introduced the musicians and prefaced each of the four movements with the original sonnet and explanation of how the music was to invoke the sounds of the seasons. The cellist and first violinist were spectacular. The theater has a bar in the lobby that seems fully stocked. Tickets were reasonable and a parking garage is so convenient across the street.
MoreFun! Tickets were online and through a phone app, fever which made the purchase and check-in fast and easy. Parking is right across the street in the garage. The theater is relatively small, has a full bar and concession in the lobby and the stage was set in front of rows of seats as well as cocktail tables along the sides. It was a late Friday night showing of A Christmas Carol which was unlike any stage show I've attended. Each act started with a different drink served to you at your table (included with the admission) by the in-character actors. I figured the drinks would be watered down, but was surprised when they were just right . It was a different take on the story where a character played the narrator. The three ghosts were fun. It was nicely done.
MoreA couple nights ago, we went to the Bijou to attend a much anticipated candlelight concert, Queen Meets Abba. We purchased tickets online from a company called Fever. 2 theater section seats about $100.00. We arrived early and waited patiently outside in the heat. The theater site says the doors open 1 hr. before showtime which would have been 5:30 but they opened at 5:50..yay! more time outside in the heat. When they finally opened the doors, we were told we couldn’t sit because the musicians had not arrived. We were sent to wait in the Bijou bar where many people purchased alcoholic beverages. 10-15 mintues passed and we were finally seated. We sat in the theater for another 15-20 minutes and then a short time before the show was to start, a lady representing Fever and the theater owner?..manager? not really sure, took the stage. We were told the show was cancelled due to an emergency, it would be rescheduled possibly the following night and we had the option to attend the rescheduled event, any other fever upcoming production or get a refund. By the time we got home there was an email in our box telling us the show was rescheduled for the following night and we could attend or take a voucher for a future performance, no mention of a refund. We tried to call the theater but there was a message saying we had to deal with Fever, not their responsibility. We emailed Fever back and forth 4 times and told them we were unable to attend the performance the next day and had no interest in a different show in the future. We told them we wanted our money refunded. They would not commit to anything and told us they were looking into our request. The next day about an hour before show time, they sent us new tickets for the rescheduled show. Again, we emailed them and told them we were unable to attend, no response. We tried again to contact the Bijou, same message on a recording. We went online to check reviews on Fever Labs and found over 2000 reviews on BBB, many of which were about situations much the same as our’s, shows cancelled last minute and no money refunded, sometimes hundreds of dollars. Some people had tried for months to get refunds. The Bijou rents their theater to this company and they have several more upcoming candlelight shows. I do not accept they have no responsibility to their patrons in this situation. They could at least have had the decency to let us know ahead of time so people would not have wasted their time, gas and parking fees, some people drove a couple hours to attend. And..the Bijou could answered their phones and offered support and advise to their patrons. They had known most of the day of the show that there was a problem. As far as Fever Labs out of NYC, do yourself a favor and never buy tickets from them. Look them up yourself on the BBB site. They are taking people’s money right and left, horrible customer service.
MoreWe decided to go out to the Bijou Theater to see a Beatles Tribute Band called The Hofners. The theater is small and intimate. They have movie theater type sitting where if you purchase tickets for that section, it is first come first serve as far as where you sit. We chose table seats and had high top tables and bar stool chairs. The Theater is pretty and the acoustics are spot on. Definitely will try to attend more shoes here
