tripadvisorMe and my son went on the guided tour and it was awesome. Joe was our tour guide and he was not only informative but very funny. I would recommend check the Gorge at Canyon Lakes with a guided tour.
MoreWe did the 3 hour tour. $20 a person. Fossils everywhere, dinosaur footprints(confirmed) small waterfalls, aquifers. Joe our guide was patient, very knowledgeable, and told jokes between facts. Bring water and a snack. A geology playground. All ages. Slow pace....1.5 miles in 3 hours
MoreWe did not go on the tour itself, as it would have been too hard going down into the canyon and up the other side, especially without a handrail, which I always use on even stairs, let alone uneven rocks. We did see a tour in progress and heard a bit of the leader's teaching. It would have been a learning experience to do, I believe. As to the self-guided, it was okay, The views of the rock strata were interesting. We do see similar rocks along the highway, and the waterfalls were small and undramatic. The walk was uneven but not very difficult. Inside the outhouse, the toilet paper is inside the covered container and there is also a trash bin. The hole was really deep, so the air was fresh.
MoreThe three-hour tour is well worth the price. This was part of our family vacation. Our tour guide was a retired geologist who obviously loved what he was doing ... interesting, funny, and great with the kids. This is truly an excellent experience for all ages. Please note, it does get very HOT in the Gorge. So, be prepared for the heat.
MoreCanyon Lake Gorge is a fantastic present-day example that depicts what the power of a current of water can do. The actual gorge was created in 2002 over a span of just six days when 34 inches of rainfall occurred and overtopped the Canyon Lake spillway...the result was a 150 feet deep gorge that was carved out in this short amount of time by water flowing at 65 thousand feet per second. The park is very well maintained, immaculately kept, and very user friendly with educational signposts along a wide mulched trail along the canyon edge. Very beautiful and awe inspiring...highly recommend.
