tripadvisorMy wife and I were exploring the town during our four night visit when we saw the magnificent historic State Theater. As we have UK live music industry backgrounds the theater particularly appealed to us and by chance the Back of House, aka Stage Manager, David Santos was outside and following a short conversation invited us in for a look around. The theater has a stalls and circle auditorium with a 1600-seat capacity regularly presenting live shows, plays, comedy and films. Interestingly the building wasn't always a theater beginning life as an auto garage and dealership showroom which if you look closely still forms part of the box office to the right of the frontage. It was transformed into a theater and in 1928 it had it's opening night. It is an impressive building with many features including the church like ceiling of the foyer leading to the seating, chandeliers and even an open fireplace. We thoroughly enjoyed our tour together with the historical background details provided, thank you so much David, you were the perfect tour guide.
MoreIt’s an old theater and it’s wonderful, quirky, conveniently located and has the best popcorn. But what really makes it special is the staff and management. They go out of their way to be helpful and kind. They notice people who might need a little help or who have issues and they make their experiences easier and happier. The sound is great. If you don’t have fear of heights, every seat is good. Great sound and sight lines in the balcony. Friendly crowds, a range of artists and shows. Highly recommend!
MoreParked in a garage and an easy .3 mile walk to the venue. Wonderful, old Theater. Comfortable seats. They had a full service bar. We saw Little Feat and they were amazing! Next shows aren’t until September. Great website to buy tickets.
MoreI have been to the State many times for many different shows. Most recently we saw Graham Nash and Judy Collins. The performances were excellent and there is not a bad seat in the house!
MoreThis iconic landmark has been in Ithaca forever, and I saw movies here as a child. Not having been back since those days, I returned to see the Tom's Elton Tribute Band. The venue is flat out gorgeous, and still has the unique features of old time theater. The vistas from the balcony are gorgeous...and we had seats in the front row-wonderful!Unfortunately, our friends had seats in the second row near people who were obviously very drunk. They were loud and laughing inappropriately with a cackling voice throughout the entire show. The people left at least twice during the performance to get more drinks, which meant that the servers were literally choosing to serve obviously drunk patrons. Our friend did speak to workers at the venue on the way out, but the show was over at that point. My friends also had to move from their seats each time the girls left. They wish they had just relocated-since there was plenty of seats available.Tom was good-he's young so his voice took a bit getting used to , being long time Elton John fans. The music and piano playing was epic!!
