tripadvisorVery cool place! You cannot see it all it one visit; there is SO much to see!Dolls of every type. And the doll houses were amazing! Some were truly exceptional in their realistic replication of real homes right down to the tiniest detail (like paintings on the wall). They also had some toys from the past but not many really.Their was a Lionel train set up with scenery around the tracks. Trish, the nice lady who worked there, turned them on and 3 trains went around on parallel tracks. We spent almost 2 hours there and weren't even close to being able to see everything. The cases are packed full. The museum will be moving across the street to a new location where things will be spread out better for viewing. The only small problem was that on the audio tour, not everything matched up what you were seeing to what you heard on the recording because recently they re-arranged some of the items in the cases. This museum is definitely worth a visit, especially if you are of the older generation!
MoreNot to be missed! An exceptional collection of precious dolls from all ages and many unique miniatures. Every single piece is a joy to behold. Some have very interesting histories and some are incredibly rare. It takes a long time to drink in all the details, so give yourself plenty of time to enjoy this magical storehouse of treasures! There are cool trains and planes too.
MoreWe toured the NC Museum of Dolls, Toys, and Miniatures with a group. The museum is open Thursday thru Saturday from 10 AM - 4 PM. It is larger than it looks from the outside of the building. This establishment is more of a large collection of dolls, toys, and miniatures than it is a formal museum. It seems to have been lovingly collected and displayed but was not what we expected when we heard the word museum. You get a bit of a garage sale/ flea market vibe with the way some of the assorted items are placed here and there and yonder in the museum, often with no clear plan in mind. Apparently many people have donated their personal collections of items to the museum. Most people will recognize toys displayed that they had in their childhood. There are just a handful of items for sale. They do not have what most people would recognize as a gift shop. A staff member told our group that they will be moving to another building across the street and will more than double the size of the establishment. I think most people would need no more than 1 hour to visit the museum.
MoreWe visited the Doll and Toy museum in Spencer to see the trains and the doll houses. There is so much more to the museum than it looks from outside. The person who ran the train for us said they were all Lionel trains from 1950's forward. The layout is massive! There are so many doll houses to look at and see the tiny items inside because most of them are lit up. There is a children's area for little ones to play in and that kept my grandchild happy after he played the children's scavenger hunt. FUn!Really enjoyed the afternoon there. Highly recommend.
MoreUnfortunately I did not call their answering machine. My wife wanted to see the dolls at at museum, I wanted to se the transportation museum in Spencer which is open. Will have to return if we ever drive this way agaid
