Quick overview
The best moving company in Kingston for YOU
Relocating can feel like a Herculean task, regardless of how prepped you are. All the pre-move research, including finding the best moving company for your needs, can quickly become a time suck. And there's no guarantee your phone calls, emails or completed "request estimate" forms will be answered quickly (or at all). We can't choose a moving company for you, but we can offer options to alleviate the stress and streamline the process. As you prep and plan, consider these factors when compiling your list of potential movers.
Some companies charge hourly rates, while others offer a flat fee. Ask about surcharges when you connect. If cost is a primary concern, Man with a Van is the most budget-friendly. Also, ask if estimates are binding. If not, they may change unexpectedly.
We also asked about each company's busy season. The most popular move times are the beginning and end of each month, as well as weekends, and early spring through late autumn. The more flexible you are, or the better able to plan, the greater the chance you'll get the date you want with your chosen company. Otherwise, expect a two- to four-week wait during the peak moving season. If you have a last-minute move, especially during the off-season, try Black Diamond Relocation .
Our top overall pick for the best moving company in Kingston is Man with a Van. The company doesn't require a deposit, and its rates are very reasonable, starting at $88 per hour for one mover and a van for a minimum of three hours. It's also been in business for over 16 years and has a five-star Google rating, a 4.6-star Yelp rating and a 4.8 Angi rating.

Man with a Van is our best overall Kingston mover
Three movers from Man with A Van pose in front of a white moving truck
"We've been locally owned and operated for over 20 years," said Dave Miller, owner of Man with a Van. They're set up to do smaller jobs, which their prices reflect. Miller also stated that the company relies on word of mouth from satisfied customers and receives approximately 30% of its new business from referrals.
Man with a Van operates with 10-foot vans and 20-foot trucks, depending on the size and distance of the move. The company contracts for interstate moves up to about 150 miles with its trucks and 200 miles to 300 miles with its vans, but the bulk of its moves are local, according to Miller. While the company doesn't provide packing or storage services, Man with a Van offers specialty moving for single items like gun safes, pianos, and other possessions. ( Moving pianos can be more complicated than you think , and transporting firearms and gun safes is strictly regulated in certain locales.)
Miller said the company calculates moves by the hour once potential clients provide the move dates, where they're moving from and to, what they're moving, and other details like whether stairs or heavy items are involved. "We don't add an excessive stairs surcharge," said Miller, "but just send more movers." Man with a Van charges an excessive weight fee for items over 300 pounds, such as pianos.

The company's busy season begins in early spring and lasts through late fall, which is typical of most moving companies. The beginning and end of most months tend to be busier, with the slower periods typically falling in the middle of the month. The company books its moves about two to three weeks in advance and does not require a deposit to hold your move date.
The minimum number of hours for a job is three, and rates start at $88 per hour for a van and one mover. Most jobs need at least two movers, which bumps the price to $124 per hour, said Miller. If a job requires three movers, the hourly rate increases to $160. If you have a relatively small move, expect to pay between $372 and $480 to start.
Miller said other charges customers might encounter include furniture insurance if they choose that option or fees for packing materials, such as mattress bags . We requested a quote to move a two-bedroom, 900-square-foot apartment with typical furniture and 25 boxes from Kingston, N.Y., to Paramus, N.J., and Miller estimated a cost between $1,500 and $1,600.
Man with a Van is not BBB accredited but has a five-star Google rating and a 4.6-star Yelp rating. The company website also lists its Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC), New York State (NYS) and U.S. DoT licenses. While the company doesn't conduct background checks on its workers, they are all full-time employees.
Man with a Van is open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday and is closed on Sundays. This business is located at 8 Enterprise Rd., New Paltz, N.Y., 12561. Call 845-255-6347 or visit its website for additional information about your move.
Customer testimonial
We have used Man with a Van three times. The first time was 25 years ago when we moved into a new home, the second time was about three years ago when we needed some bedroom furniture moved and the third time was last week when we moved to our next home. Every time we have used them, we found them to be super friendly, accommodating and efficient. The men were very careful and had positive attitudes. They worked well together and consulted with us throughout the whole process. The price was very reasonable. I would recommend them without reservation. - Martha F., Yelp Reviews (⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐)

Black Diamond Relocation is the top alternative Kingston mover
Black Diamond Relocation
Roger Moss, owner of Black Diamond Relocation, has worked in the moving industry for more than 30 years. "I went to school to be a teacher and did moving on the weekends," he said. "I figured I'd work 'one more summer,' and here we are, decades later."
Black Diamond Relocation is a full-service company offering interstate and local services, full packing and crating with detailed packing inventories and expedited moving for critical shipments with time-sensitive needs. The company's peak season runs from May through October, and weekends are especially popular as are the beginning and end of each month. During peak moving times, the company may book as far in advance as 30 days; during the off-season, next-day service is sometimes available, although not guaranteed.
Moss said the company prefers in-person estimates for price quotes. "I'm old school and use various factors to calculate the cost," he said. Each Black Diamond job has a binding, flat-rate price, and the company does not offer hourly rates, nor does it add surcharges for excess weight or stairs, though a fuel charge may apply for longer-distance moves greater than 150 miles. The fuel surcharge varies based on the total distance, but "there are no hidden fees," Moss said.
We asked for an estimate to move furniture and 25 boxes from a 900-square-foot, two-bedroom apartment from Kingston, N.Y., to Paramus, N.J., and Moss gave a ballpark range of $1,500 to $2,500. The price may spike toward the higher end of that range if the movers have to carry things up or down flights of stairs or must carry your stuff a longer distance to the truck, said Moss.

The company doesn't require a deposit, and although they don't calculate moving costs hourly, Moss said the minimum price you can expect to pay for moving within New York state is $750. Black Diamond Relocation will move you out-of-state, but because they're not part of a van line and don't subcontract with one of the national interstate movers, their limit is about 1,200 miles, he said.
"The same crew that loads everything onto the truck will drive it to the new location and unload it," Moss said. Depending on distance, Black Diamond's interstate moves typically take one to three days.
Black Diamond Relocations is not BBB accredited, but it has a five-star Google rating from 100 reviews. While the company doesn't conduct background checks on its employees, it also doesn't use contractors. "The moving world is small," said Moss. "I source my staff through personal relationships. We're very family-like with very little turnover."
Black Diamond Relocation's business address is 9 Mansion Street, Suite 222, Poughkeepsie, N.Y., 12601. It is open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and is closed on weekends. I had the BEST experience with Black Diamond movers! They were flexible with my move date, and Roger was a pleasure to chat with over the phone. Their price was competitive, and they were worth EVERY penny. Roger brought his A-team with three incredible local guys who were not only strong and motivated but also very kind and fun to be around. From start to finish, my full move was done in less than 5 hours. Nothing damaged, and everything placed exactly where I needed it to go. Thank you, Black Diamond Movers for a flawless move—definitely know who I'm calling for the next time I'm in need of relocating! - Cody R., Google Reviews (⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐)

Black Diamond Relocation has excellent reviews, including several left on Google within the past month. Cusotmers praise the company for its professionalism, responsiveness, positivity and good communication. Moss provides flat-rate estimates so you know exactly how much you'll pay upfront. The company does moves up to 1,200 miles, and the same crew stays with your stuff from pick-up through delivery.

BLVD is our best national mover for long-distance jobs
BLVD moving truck in front of a California home
Yahoo Local is committed to highlighting top-performing local businesses. Still, we understand that national moving companies can sometimes be a better match depending on the move and the customer's needs. Be sure to explore our breakdown comparing local and national movers to learn more. In our evaluation of the leading nationwide movers , BLVD secured the number one position.
Founded in 2000, BLVD Moving has grown into one of the top national moving companies by leveraging decades of hands-on experience in the relocation industry. Although it operates just four locations in California, it provides both local and long-distance moving services to customers throughout the United States. This independent, family-owned company maintains its own professional moving crews and fleet of trucks. According to its legal terms , it may also partner with third-party agents or subcontractors for some moves — a common industry practice used to handle increased demand.
To assess pricing, we requested a quote from BLVD Moving for a 500-mile interstate move involving about 1,340 cubic feet of belongings — the equivalent of a standard three-bedroom household without major appliances. The company provided an estimate of approximately $6,700, which is comparable to what other highly rated long-distance moving companies charge. BLVD requires a 33% deposit at booking, with half of the remaining balance due on pickup day and the rest upon delivery.

Financing options available
If you need to cancel your move, BLVD allows cancellations with a full deposit refund as long as the request is made at least two full business days before the scheduled pickup. For long-distance deliveries, the company provides a delivery window of 2 to 21 business days, based on the total distance of the move. This timeline starts from the preferred delivery date provided by the customer, meaning that shipments could take slightly over a month to arrive in some cases.
BLVD Moving advises customers to book their move at least 30 days ahead of time. For high-demand periods—like summer months or the beginning and end of the month—it's best to schedule even earlier. The quote process is simple: choose between a virtual walkthrough or submit an online inventory list for faster pricing. The company also offers financing options with interest rates as low as 0%, available to qualified applicants.
As one of the top-rated national movers, BLVD Moving is BBB-accredited and holds an A rating, with 76 logged complaints — a figure that's typical among large-scale moving providers. It boasts a 4.4-star Google rating from 860 reviewers and a 2.3-star average on Yelp from 340 users. All of the company's movers are fully employed and undergo background checks.
BLVD Moving's main office is located at 21622 Plummer St., Chatsworth, California, 91311. Business hours are from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. PST, seven days a week. To get a quote, you can call 844-274-0500 or visit the company's website .
Customer testimonial
We had an amazing experience with this company! From start to finish the crew was extremely professional polite and careful. They expertly broke down my furniture and put moving pads and saran Wrap to protect everything. I had never moved a long distance so I was really scared and a bit hesitant to use them because of their Yelp rating however my sales rep assured me that they had gone through a lot of positive changes in the last 6 months and I just felt comfortable choosing them cause they were local to me. Delivery took about a week and while it was hard not having my stuff I'm so grateful that I had family nearby that I could crash with until I got my stuff. So far my furniture has no damages but still unpacking boxes so I will update my review accordingly once done! — HH, Yelp reviews. (⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐)

BLVD Moving is our top pick for a national mover due to its combination of experience, flexibility and relatively strong Google reviews. It has background-checked crews, but it also reserves the right in its terms and conditions to subcontract your move or assign it to agents. The quote process is smooth, in our experience, requiring a simple online inventory, and BLVD's cancellation policy is relatively good.

Kingston moving FAQs
What info should you have when requesting an estimate?
When you're ready for your moving estimate, have the following info handy: your current and new addresses, your home's square footage and its number of rooms. Moving companies often ask specifically about the number of bedrooms to help determine the size of van or truck to bring. (Read our guide to which size rental truck is best for your move .)
Tell them about heavy items, like pianos, pool tables, safes or entertainment centers, as you may need to pay a surcharge for anything weighing over 300 pounds. Also mention antiques, artwork or high-value items requiring special handling like crating for a safe move.
What should you ask whenrequesting an estimate?
Always ask about the bottom line once you've received your estimate. Companies that offer non-binding estimates may add surcharges for fuel, excessive stairs or particularly heavy boxes. Other companies may include all fees in the estimate — known as a binding estimate — so there are no unwelcome (and expensive) surprises on moving day.
Ask about moving insurance . Moving companies generally offer very basic coverage, but its protection is limited. You can always add another policy via a third party or the moving company, if it's offered, to cover breakage or loss when your stuff is moved.
Find out how you'll pay and whether the moving company requires a deposit (neither Kingston company we spoke with requested a deposit to hold a move date). Some companies may only take a check or cash, but most accept credit cards.
What should you know about packing and storage in Kingston?
Kingston's climate includes cold winters and humid summers. If you're packing and storing your goods before you move, opt for climate-controlled storage units to protect your belongings from temperature fluctuations and moisture damage. Be mindful of potential pest issues and choose a clean, well-maintained facility. Prioritize accessibility and security features like 24/7 surveillance and secure entry gates. You may even want to get additional insurance to protect your stuff while it's in storage.
What's different about condo and apartment moving in Kingston?
Moving into an apartment or condo above the ground floor? Check to see if your new home has an elevator and whether your movers can access it when you move in. Some buildings have specific times reserved for moving; others may have a dedicated freight elevator you can reserve. If your building has specific limits, let your moving company know. Consider notifying residents about your moving day plans to minimize disruptions or surprises.
Do you need moving permits or licenses to move in Kingston?
Kingston, N.Y., doesn't require you to obtain a permit to move. However, all moving companies in New York State must be licensed and insured. Visit FMCSA (the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) to verify that the company's USDOT status is active. You can also email nymoving@dot.ny.gov or call 618-457-6512 to verify that the Commissioner of Transportation has licensed the company. Most moving companies will also list their ICC, NYS DOT and US DOT license numbers on their websites.

How much should you tip movers in Kingston?
There are two schools of thought for tipping movers. One suggests tipping 10% to 20% of your move cost, so budget $112 to $150 divided evenly among the workers if your move costs $750. Another option is to tip each mover between $5 and $10 per hour, so if your move took five hours with three movers, tip each person $25 to $50. Check our guide to tipping professional movers for more recommendations.
