Omaha, Neb. is a bustling little metropolis in an otherwise rural state, which means it sees a fair number of people moving to and from its confines every year. Fortunately, there are plenty of moving companies in the region to take on that work, but choosing the right one for your move can be hard. That's why we've done much of the hard work for you, comparing reviews and looking at things like proper licensing and Better Business Bureau (BBB) accreditation across more than two dozen movers to objectively rank them. We then spoke with each company in our top picks to get the latest information on pricing, hour minimums and more so you can make an informed decision.
Quick overview
The best moving company in Omaha for YOU
Preparing to move is never easy, but the best thing you can do to ease the stress is to start early. The sooner you figure out which moving company to go with, the better chance you have of getting your preferred moving date and you may potentially save some money. You can read our guide to the best and worst times to move for more, but the short version is that movers are typically busiest during the summer, on weekends and at the end of each month.
The best place to start is to search online reviews for movers in your area and seek recommendations from friends and family who have moved recently. Also look for certifications from industry groups. For example, the American Trucking Association's (ATA) ProMover designation signals that a company holds itself to a high standard of ethics and business practices. The companies on our list are meant to give you a head start, but you can apply these tips for any moving company.
Picking the right mover means staying within your budget, so take note of charges beyond just the hourly rate from each company. Some will have travel charges to cover gas and the crew's time on the road, and most will charge extra for moving things like pianos and safes. If you're on a tight budget, Black Belt Movers has the lowest hourly rates among the movers on this list.
Chieftain Van Lines is our choice for the best overall moving company in Omaha because it combines a skilled, experienced crew with high praise from customers. It also holds an A+ rating with the BBB , where it has been accredited since 1998. With both long-distance and local moving services, in-home moving and more, Chieftain is a great pick for most moves.

A Chieftain Van Lines company truck sits parked and ready for a move

It's also been accredited by the BBB since 1998 and holds an A+ rating with no registered complaints, so you know you can trust your move to its crew's hands.
Pricing for Chieftain Van Lines is on the higher end among companies on this list, but it isn't the highest. A company representative we spoke with said the price for a three-person crew is $215 per hour with a two-hour minimum. That means you can expect to pay at least $430, though a home move will take longer than that anyway.

BLVD Moving is the best national mover
The BLVD Moving team unloads a company truck during a move
Yahoo Local is all about giving people solid info so they can make confident decisions. We love highlighting local businesses, but depending on your needs, a national moving company might be a better fit. If you're still trying to figure it out, check out our guide that compares local movers to national ones . If you decide to go the national route, BLVD Moving is our top choice .
BLVD Moving was founded in 2000 and is run by a crew with decades of experience in the moving industry. It only has four offices in California, but it handles both nearby and long-distance moves across the U.S. The company is independently owned and family-operated, with its own trucks and movers. According to its terms , though, it might use outside agents or subcontractors for certain jobs — which is a pretty normal move-industry practice during busy times.
We got a quote from BLVD Moving for a 500-mile relocation involving about 1,340 cubic feet of belongings — which is about what you'd expect for a basic three-bedroom home without large appliances. The estimate came to around $6,700, which is in the same range as other national moving services. To book the move, it asks for a 33% deposit, then 50% of the remaining balance at pickup. The last payment is due when your stuff is delivered.

Financing
If plans change, BLVD Moving offers a refund on your deposit if you cancel at least two full business days before the scheduled pickup date. The delivery timeline ranges from two to 21 business days depending on distance. That window starts on the delivery date you request — so once you're ready to receive everything, you might need to wait a little over a month.
BLVD suggests locking in your moving date at least a month in advance — possibly earlier if you're planning a move during busy seasons like summer or around the start or end of a month. (You can read our full guide on the best and worst times to move for more tips.) The estimate process is quick — you can either do a virtual walkthrough or submit an online inventory form to speed things up. It also has financing options for qualified customers, with interest rates as low as 0%.
BLVD Moving is accredited by the BBB and has an A- rating, with 77 complaints listed. That might sound like a lot, but it's not out of the ordinary for large national moving companies. It holds a 4.4-star average rating on Google (891 reviews) and a 2.3-star average on Yelp (340 reviews). All movers are direct employees and go through background checks.
The company's headquarters are located at 21622 Plummer St., Chatsworth, Calif., 91311. It's open daily from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. local time. You can reach out at 844-274-0500 or visit the website to get a quote.

Recently had a move schedule with BLVD movers to move from New York to California. Tina called me leading up to the week of the move and coordinated everything, including being transparent about possible charges. The day of the moving, Danny and Chris were in constant contact with us. They were able to do a great job double parking in narrow New York street. They also packed up everything quickly, efficiently, and were extremely professional from start to end. Would definitely recommend. - Jesus L., Google reviews (⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐)

Omaha moving FAQs
What info should you have when requesting an estimate?
Moving companies are used to fielding calls all day and will usually do a good job of walking you through everything they need to know. Still, they often request the same sets of information, so it's a good idea to have some facts about your move ready to go. Here's a short list of information you should be prepared to provide:
-
Addresses for both ends of your move
-
The size of your home (number of bedrooms and square footage)
-
Your type of home (apartment, condo or house)
-
Any specialty items you need moved (piano, gun safe, etc.)
-
Whether you need packing services
-
Full inventory of items (usually applies to flat-rate movers)
All of the information listed above helps your moving company determine everything from the number of movers and trucks you'll need to how long it will take and the estimated overall cost. Specialty items are particularly important to note because they're often charged as a separate flat fee. While most movers use an hourly rate for local moves, some use a flat-rate model instead and require a full inventory of items and boxes to give you an estimate.
What should you know about packing and storage inOmaha ?
Omaha is typically hot and humid during the summer months, so properly protecting your belongings is crucial to preventing mold growth and mildew in storage. Always keep your boxes in a cool, dry place while they're waiting to be moved. If you have to use storage during your move, opt for a climate- or temperature-controlled storage unit for any items that are especially sensitive. Check out our guide to the most common items that require climate-controlled storage for more tips.
Also consider whether you want to pack your boxes or have your moving company do it for you. Having your movers pack is convenient, but it can double the cost of your move depending on how much stuff you have. If you're on the fence, read our guide to choosing between professional packers or doing it yourself for more advice.
What's different about condo and apartment moving inOmaha ?
If you live in a multi-level apartment or condo building, there may be specific rules around moving, including which days tenants can move, which elevators they can use and whether you need to reserve one. Check with your building manager to clarify any policies around your move and coordinate closely with your mover.
Some buildings may also require a certificate of insurance (COI) from your moving company as well. This document certifies that a moving company carries sufficient insurance to cover any damage to the building that may occur during your move. Again, ask your building manager if one is required if you're using a moving company.
Do you need moving permits or licenses to move in Omaha?
You don't need a specific license to move yourself, but moving companies must be licensed through the Nebraska Public Service Commission (PSC). You can see a list of currently licensed movers at the PSC website .
Additionally, you may need to obtain a parking permit if you plan to park a moving truck in a public or metered space for an extended period. You can find more information about Omaha parking permits at the Park Omaha website . If you're using a portable storage pod or container that will be left on the street for an extended period of time, you can apply for a street obstruction permit from the Omaha Public Works website .
For more, you can read our full guide to Nebraska's moving company licensing regulations .
How much should you tip movers in Omaha?
You aren't required to tip your movers, but it's pretty common when your moving team does a great job. Tips usually range between 10% and 20% of the overall move cost and can be split evenly between members of the crew. Cash is usually preferred, but some movers may have the option to tip with Zelle or to add it to your final bill.
For more advice, read through out full guide to tipping movers .
