ChatGPT, Claude, and Grok hit by simultaneous outages

ChatGPT, Claude, and Grok all went offline on Thursday in an unusual simultaneous outage affecting three of the leading AI chatbots in the United States.

OpenAI's ChatGPT and Codex coding tool were experiencing elevated error rates, the company said on its status dashboard. Anthropic said its Claude models Opus 4.8 and Opus 5 were still experiencing outages, while other Claude models had recovered to baseline error rates, according to Axios . Grok, the chatbot from Elon Musk's xAI, was also down, with the company acknowledging it was working to address the problem, according to Bloomberg .

Downdetector — a service that tracks outages — recorded reports from tens of thousands of users about disruptions to OpenAI.

While individual platform outages happen regularly, having all three services fail simultaneously is a notable anomaly, according to Axios. Google's Gemini also saw reported issues, though Google had not issued a confirmed outage notice.

Microsoft Azure, whose cloud infrastructure underpins all three AI services, was also dealing with its own outages on Thursday. Some technology outlets suggested Azure's problems may have contributed to the AI service disruptions.
