High earners are making their LLM preferences clear: They’re using Claude. Grok, evidently, is for the hoi polloi. That’s according to new research from Epoch AI, a nonprofit AI group.
Eighty percent of U.S. adults using Claude live in households earning $100,000 or more a year. 64% use Microsoft Copilot, ChatGPT at 60%, Grok at 56%, Google’s Gemini at 56%, and Meta at 37%, according to the report, which surveyed 3,000 people.
About 41% of U.S. households make $100,000 or more per year, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. But among Claude users, it’s eight in 10.
That’s pretty good for a company that is burning 2–3x less than its biggest competitor, OpenAI, though both are, of course, burning cash.

This survey data from Epoch AI shows that high earners, for now at least, prefer Anthropic’s model. Epoch doesn’t give us any information on why they are, but by correlating their findings with LLM leaderboards where Claude dominates in areas like reasoning, performance, price, and speed, we can assume it’s simply because, today, they are the best model.
Underneath Claude’s utility, which ebbs and flows in the highly competitive landscape of the LLMs, is perhaps something even more valuable: Anthropic and Claude as a burgeoning economic status symbol.
Just as the iPhone became a symbol of economic status, Anthropic's Claude may be walking the same path. That means more than future retention for Anthropic. It means premium, high-earner data. And given how these models are trained, that data feeds back into the training sets, creating a social-proof loop that reinforces Claude's standing for years to come.
