While it may not be the best-known AI chatbot , Anthropic’s Claude has received a lot of buzz over its research-focused capabilities. It also made headlines after the company refused to play ball with the Pentagon, resulting in an ongoing lawsuit . All this may have you wondering what all the fuss is about. Here are eight ways to get started with Claude.
1. Import Memories and Preferences
Like many AI chatbots, Claude looks to personalize its responses to you based on details from previous conversations. But if you’re new to Claude, there is no memory or chat history for the AI to consult. This is why Anthropic has made it easy to import your history from ChatGPT or another service. To tackle this, head to Claude's memory import page . If you're already logged in on the web, open Settings > Privacy , then click the Manage button next to Memory preferences and select Start import .
A small window pops up, prompting you to import memory to Claude. Copy the prompt and then paste it into the other AI service from which you want to import your memories. The AI should then respond with a list of your saved memories and preferences.
Copy the generated text, then switch back to Claude and paste the information into the appropriate field. Click the Add to Memory button to have Claude display a formatted list of everything it now knows about you.
2. Use Chat History to Personalize Responses
Maybe you’d like Claude to use the details from your conversations to tailor its responses to you. That’s easy enough to do. Click your account name on the left sidebar, choose Settings > Privacy setting and click the Manage button next to Memory preferences . Turn on Search and reference chats and Generate memory from chat history . You should also click the Learn more links for both settings to learn what they do.
If you ever have privacy concerns about Claude knowing too much about you, just turn off these settings. Don’t want your conversations being used to train Claude? If it's enabled, turn off Help improve Claude .
3. Analyze Uploaded Photos and Files
Got a photograph of a landmark you want identified or a document you need summarized? Claude can easily tackle that task via its file upload feature. To try this with a photo, click the plus icon, select Add files or photos , and then select the photo you want Claude to identify.
At the prompt, ask Claude to identify the item in the photo. In response, the AI should provide details about the object, ideally pinpointing its location and other attributes.
To try this with a different file, such as a PDF or Microsoft Office file, click the plus icon again, select Add files or photos , and then select the file you want Claude to analyze or summarize.
At the prompt, tell Claude to summarize the file or answer your specific question about it. Claude then displays the summary or answer to your query.
4. Analyze a Screenshot of Your Current Window
Beyond analyzing an uploaded file, Claude can also work with a screenshot of any open window on your computer. To try this, open a document, window, web page, or other screen that you want Claude to summarize or address any questions you may have. Back at Claude, click the plus icon and select Take a Screenshot . Claude will ask for permission to see a specific window or your entire screen. Select the window you wish to use, and a screenshot of it automatically appears in the prompt.
At the prompt, enter your question and submit it to Claude. You can ask it to summarize a page or other window, or ask for help with a specific task. For example, you might be looking to perform a specific action in a software program. Use a screenshot of that program and ask Claude how to achieve your goal. The AI should respond based on its knowledge of the program.
5. Connect to Third-Party Services
Want Claude to help you analyze, summarize, or just assist you with your files across Google or on GitHub? Connect the AI to a third-party service. Once a connection is established, ask Claude to search for and work with specific files and other data across the services.
To set this up on your Claude web page, click Customize at the top of the left sidebar and choose Connectors . By default, the following apps and services appear: Box , GitHub, Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google Drive . Click the plus icon at the top and select Browser connectors to see a host of other services.
Select the service you want to use and then click Connect . You’ll be asked to grant Claude permission to access your chosen service. Click Continue and then sign in with your account for that service. Follow the screens to complete the connection. Back at Claude, you can manage the read/write permissions for that service on a more granular scale.
To access these services from the prompt window, submit a command that incorporates a file or other data in the connected service. For example, you could ask about a specific email stored in Gmail. Claude should then connect to the service to respond to your request.
6. Turn Conversations Into Charts and Diagrams
Sometimes a chart or diagram can address your question better than loads of text. To answer certain types of queries, Claude can generate images—even interactive ones. At the prompt, tell Claude to show you something, such as how compounded interest works. If you phrase your request properly, you’ll see some type of diagram or chart that displays the topic better than words alone could. If the image is interactive, you can modify the results by adjusting the parameters.
7. Generate Microsoft Office and PDF Files
Most AIs can generate photos based on your request, but Claude goes a step further with its ability to create Microsoft Office and PDF files. For example, you can tell Claude to generate a spreadsheet or a presentation from a file that you upload. To give this a shot, submit your request at the prompt. Allow Claude a few minutes to compile the information and create the file. You’ll then see the completed file displayed on the screen side-by-side with your chat window. You can then give Claude further instructions if you wish to make modifications.
8. Export Your Chats
Maybe you’ve been chatting with Claude for some time now, but want to add another AI to your repertoire. If you don’t want to start from scratch, you can export your chats to supply the new AI with the same conversations you’ve had with Claude. To do this, click your account name on the left sidebar, choose Settings > Privacy, and click the Export data button next to the Export data setting. At the Export data window, choose the period for the conversations and other data that you want to export—All, 30 days, 90 days, or a custom timeframe—and click Export .
You’ll receive an email when the exported file is ready. In the email, click the Download data button to save the exported data as a ZIP file, then segue to the new AI platform. The process for importing the data will vary slightly based on the product, though be aware that some programs don’t support this.
