I barely open some of my favorite apps anymore after using Gemini this way

I still use apps like YouTube, Gmail, Maps, Calendar, and Keep every day. But recently, I realized I'm opening some of them far less often than I used to.

The strange part is that I haven't stopped relying on those apps at all. Instead, Google Gemini slowly became the place where many of those interactions now start.

What surprised me most was how quickly that changed the way I use my phone. Instead of opening multiple applications, searching through tabs, or getting distracted, I could often handle things much faster from a single place.

Now I barely notice how often Gemini keeps me from opening apps directly.

Gemini works best when connected apps become part of the workflow

The turning point for me was realizing that Gemini becomes much more useful when other apps are involved.

Google's Personal Intelligence features let Gemini connect with apps and services like Gmail, Google Calendar, YouTube, Google Photos, Maps, Spotify, and WhatsApp to provide more contextual responses.

The connections are optional, and you can choose which apps Gemini can access.

Instead of asking generic questions, Gemini can start helping with things tied to my workflow. For example, I can ask questions about upcoming plans, recent emails, saved information, YouTube activity, or travel details without manually digging through multiple apps myself.

To enable it, you must open the Geminiapp, tap the settings iconfrom the left sidebar, go to Personal intelligence> Connected apps, and toggle on the apps you want Gemini to access.

Some connected apps, such as WhatsApp, Messages, and Spotify, are only available through the Gemini mobile app, and not the web version.

Gemini became my shortcut for everyday tasks

After I connected apps like Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google Keep, Gemini started feeling like a shortcut layer for productivity applications.

For example, if I open the Gemini app and ask:

What time is my dentist appointment next week?

Gemini checks my connected Calendar information and pulls up the event details without forcing me to open Calendar and search through dates myself.

I also use it often for tasks related to Gmail. If I ask:

Summarize the latest emails about my health insurance plan.

Gemini retrieves the relevant emails from Gmail and gives me an overview of the conversation.

Google Keep integration ended up being surprisingly useful, too. Sometimes while working, I suddenly remember something I need later, and instead of opening Keep manually, I'll say:

Hey Google, add oats, eggs, and milk to my grocery list.

Gemini confirms that it added the items to the correct list in Google Keep.

Most of those tasks used to involve repeatedly switching between apps, tabs, and searches. Now they usually start in one place.

Gemini changed how I use messaging apps

I didn't expect messaging apps to become one of the most useful parts of the connected apps experience, but it ended up saving me a surprising amount of time throughout the day.

After enabling support for apps like WhatsApp and Google Messages in Gemini, I realized I no longer needed to open messaging apps for every small interaction.

Google allows Gemini to help with tasks like sending messages, making calls, and drafting replies, directly through conversational prompts.

For example, if I'm busy working or walking outside, I can say:

Hey Google, send a message to Sarah saying I'll be 10 minutes late.

Gemini drafts the message directly through WhatsApp without forcing me to stop what I'm doing and open the app manually.

I also use it often for quick coordination throughout the day. Sometimes I'll say:

Hey Google, send a text message to mom asking if she needs anything from the store.

Instead of unlocking my phone, opening WhatsApp or Messages, finding the conversation, and typing manually, the interaction becomes much smoother.

I stopped constantly opening Google Search

One of the biggest changes after using Gemini more often is that I no longer open Google Search nearly as much.

Previously, I constantly opened Chrome to look up explanations, comparisons, recommendations, or troubleshooting advice. Half the time, I'd end up switching between multiple tabs to piece together one simple answer.

Now I often start with Gemini first.

For example, instead of searching for "best way to remove coffee stains from white shoes" and opening several websites filled with ads, I can ask Gemini directly and immediately get a straightforward answer with follow-up suggestions if needed.

Travel and planning questions also became much faster this way. I'll ask:

What's the best time to visit Japan if I want cooler weather and fewer crowds?

Typically, one Google search results in several unrelated tabs, as each result prompts more recommendations.

In contrast, Gemini offers a more straightforward experience because I can ask follow-up questions without restarting the search each time.

However, I still rely on Google Search for in-depth research and for verifying information from multiple sources. But for quick questions and lightweight research, Gemini often became the faster starting point.

My phone still has the same apps, but it feels less cluttered now

Using Gemini this way didn't replace my favorite apps, but now I interact with them differently.

Instead of constantly opening apps for every small task, search, reminder, message , or schedule check, many of those interactions now start in Gemini first.

I noticed fewer abandoned tabs, less accidental scrolling, and fewer moments where I opened my phone only to forget what I was originally trying to do.
