Google launches Gemini Enterprise for Legal for law firms
Google Cloud launched Gemini Enterprise for Legal on Tuesday, a platform built for law firms and corporate legal departments that uses AI agents to handle tasks including contract review, legal research, regulatory monitoring, and court filing preparation.
The product is available in preview and debuts with four law firms — Cleary Gottlieb, Freshfields, Weil, and Williams & Connolly — as launch customers. Google said the platform is the first in a series of industry-specific offerings built on its Gemini Enterprise base, alongside a companion product for financial services announced the same day.
The platform is organized around four components: purpose-built skills that guide agents through legal tasks, secure connectors to existing legal software systems, third-party agents from legal technology providers, and a governance layer that gives IT and risk teams visibility over outputs and access controls. The company said client data, firm playbooks, and model outputs stay within an organization's private cloud environment and are never used to train Google's models.
Connectors link the platform to legal software including iManage, NetDocuments, Everlaw, RelativityOne, DocuSign, and Thomson Reuters, as well as legal research databases such as the Free Law Project's CourtListener.com, according to the company. Implementation partners include Accenture, Deloitte, KPMG, and several legal technology specialists.
Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian said in a statement that ensuring agentic legal workflows are "accurate, factual, and grounded in legal authority is of critical importance."
Cleary Gottlieb Managing Partner Jeff Karpf said in a statement that Google's platform "can slot in seamlessly with other daily work tools" to help the firm's teams deliver higher-quality work for clients. Freshfields Global Managing Partner Alan Mason said the firm's "strategic, multi-year partnership with Google Cloud" is helping accelerate its AI work. Weil incoming Executive Partner Ramona Nee said the collaboration gives the firm early access to capabilities while allowing it to help shape the platform. Williams & Connolly Chairman Joe Petrosinelli said the firm looks forward to using the technology to support its litigators.
Weil co-managing partner Jonathon Soler told Reuters that client expectations have shifted, with firms now under pressure to adopt AI and demonstrate the cost savings it can deliver.
Google said solutions for healthcare, life sciences, and other professional services sectors are planned. Alphabet launched the Gemini Enterprise platform for business customers in October, positioning it as the successor to Vertex AI and a centralized hub for agent development and governance across industries. Google Cloud has emerged as a standout growth engine within Alphabet's broader portfolio.
