The Outlook Lite App Is Shutting Down
Microsoft is shutting down its Outlook Lite app for Android, a lightweight version of its email client that was designed for low-end phones and slower networks. The app will be retired starting on October 6, 2025, and after that date, new installations will be blocked.
Once the date passes, existing users can continue using the app for a limited time, but it will eventually be fully retired a few months later. The reason for the change, according to Microsoft, is to focus its investments on the flagship Outlook Mobile app for Android. The company says the main app has greater functionality and a better user experience.
When it was first launched in 2022, the Outlook Lite app was designed for users in smaller markets and those with phones that had as little as 1GB of RAM. The app was optimized to use less battery and work on slower 2G and 3G networks. It was also a super-small download, at about 5MB, which is a big difference from the full Outlook app, which is much larger and can take a while to load up.
I like my email to be simple, so I am one of those affected by this news. I was hoping that there would be a low data mode or something similar, but that's not coming. There will not be any replacement for those who like the efficiency of the app unless you use third-party email checkers, which I don't recommend at all.
The smaller app had the core features of Outlook, like access to email, calendar, and contacts, without all the extra stuff that can make the main app feel heavy. While the main app is great and has a lot of features, like cloud storage integration and Microsoft's Copilot assistant, it can be a bit of a resource hog. A major downside of the Outlook app is that it will show you ads unless you pay for a Microsoft 365 subscription.
Microsoft basically just wants to keep working on one big app instead of maintaining two separate ones, and this isn't the first time the company has done this. Microsoft also retired other smaller products like the standalone Editor browser extension and the Cortana mobile app to streamline its focus.
To prepare for the change, Microsoft is recommending that everyone switch over to the full Outlook Mobile app . You can do this easily by selecting the "Install Microsoft Outlook" banner in the notification section of your Outlook Lite app, or you can just go to the Google Play Store, search for "Microsoft Outlook," and download it from there. Since all this does is grab your email from the servers, no manual data migration is required. Your emails, attachments, and calendar entries will all be there when you log in to the new app with your existing credentials.
The full retirement is expected within a few months after the October 6 date. So, it's probably best to switch as soon as possible to avoid any disruption.
