I’ve been an avid Kindle user for almost 10 years now, and I’ve watched Amazon evolve its devices over time, building lighter and faster versions that make the digital reading experience feel lifelike and friction-free. I’ve always been a Kindle Paperwhite devotee, especially because of its multi-week battery life and water-resistant capabilities, and loved taking the device on long flights, hole-in-the-wall coffee shops or to my windowsill on rainy days.
However, Amazon’s latest Colorsoft e-reader may have changed my mind about the Paperwhite – and even better, it’s over 30% off ahead of Amazon’s Big Spring Sale. Not only that, but you can also buy a bundle with a black and clear back case for a whopping 40% off! And keep in mind that both versions feature no ads at all, so you’d better hurry before these sell out.
In the past, there were times I decided to let my Kindle go in favor of a paperback copy of a book. Sometimes it’s just nice to feel the weight of a book and flip through the various pages, reveling in the art of a hardcover copy. Moreover, the device’s black-and-white display wasn’t right for graphic novels – I need to see and feel the color to fully immerse myself in an illustrated book.
It seems like Amazon finally heard my constant prayers. They just released the Kindle Colorsoft, an e-reader that has — you guessed it — a color display. The first generation came out in October of last year and was unfortunately a let-down; fans complained about the constant yellow tint on the screen . Luckily, this updated model has eliminated the problem and I believe is a device that’s worth your buck.
The Kindle Colorsoft features you need to know
The 2025 Colorsoft has a 7-inch screen and, just like the Paperwhite , is completely waterproof, meaning you can read in the pool or the bathtub without missing a beat.
It’s also a whole gram lighter than the previous model and is made from 18 percent recycled material, according to the brand. It holds 16 gigabytes of data and comes with three months of Kindle Unlimited, which gives you access to thousands of books and magazines — and yes, this includes comics, so you can take full advantage of the color screen.
Amazon made significant improvements on the display, with colors seeming more vivid and, of course, the aforementioned yellow tint finally eliminated. Text also looks brighter and is easier to read.
Apart from the comics, graphic novels, and books you’ll be devouring, you can also upload your own PDFs and documents to the Kindle Colorsoft. The Kindle supports a wide variety of text formats. There is also Bluetooth 5.1 built in, allowing you to connect your favorite pair of buds so you can enjoy all your audiobooks straight from this device.
Battery life runs a full eight weeks on the Kindle. This is less than the Kindle Paperwhite’s 10-week battery life but still decent enough to last multiple road trips or long-haul flights without needing to charge.
What I love about using the Colorsoft
The display is glare-free, meaning you can read in natural light as well, and the auto-adjustable brightness means your eyes won’t strain, no matter how bright or dark the skies are. I particularly enjoy reading this Kindle in the dark. Colors seem vivid and bright, and almost indiscernible from a tablet screen. Not only can you adjust the brightness, but also the warmth of the screen, giving you a fully customizable reading experience.
My one favorite part will always be using the highlight feature — which I can now use in color. I love highlighting my favorite quotes from books, and Kindle neatly organizes them in a separate document for you. Loading speeds and page-turning time felt snappy and responsive to me, and in the one week I had it, I didn’t face any crashes.
Resolution is better when you’re reading in black and white, but the color display itself is quite vivid and a big step up from the previous model’s lackluster display. If you’ve been waiting to buy the Colorsoft, this is the version you want.
The colors seem crisp, vivid, and while it isn’t like an actual paper book, the convenience of having thousands of books on such a lightweight portable device makes it worth it to me. The display is easy to use and colors generally seem more pronounced in this Kindle edition. Multiweek battery life and an IPX8 water-resistant rating are a boon, too. Sure, it might not be the brightest, highest-contrast Kindle out there (the Paperwhite still wins with this), but if you want an easier way to read comics and graphic novels on the go without lugging pounds of books around, the Kindle Colorsoft is for you.
Don’t just take my word for it. Check out what other reviewers have to say about Amazon’s latest color Kindle below .
“[…] I like the size, which is more compact than my iPad, and great for when I want to have something to occupy me on the go, such as doctor office waiting rooms. The charge on this thing really does hold. I used it for a week, did not charge it for two weeks (or more?) and opened it ― 90% charge still. Amazing! Much better power usage than using my iPad, and even more easily portable than my iPad for reading books on the go while having a lot to choose from.
I got the ad-free version, and I actually really like some of the designs they use as the “screen saver.” They are pleasant and calm with nice coloring. I am glad I got the ad-free feature. The coloring of things on the Colorsoft is a sort of muted coloring, which at first was a little disappointing to me, but overall I think is actually kind of calming. The name of the device is probably a good clue to what you are getting here ― color, but soft color. It isn’t a very vibrant coloring but once you adjust to that, it’s actually nice and feels like it is part of the experience/aesthetic of using this device. […]
I definitely am glad I finally got a Kindle, and that I was able to wait until the Colorsoft had become available. I have seen the black/white Kindle and did not like it, but instead I would recommend this Kindle Colorsoft if you are interested in using your Kindle books in a more portable way without having to view everything in strict black/white.” – J.D. (This review has been edited for length. Read the full review .)“I really like my new Kindle Colorsoft. It really enhances the reading experience with color added to it, and I find it very user friendly, and it has a lot of new options on it that the older versions don’t have. The battery life is exceptional, charged after Christmas and now near the end of January with 80% battery life. I find that the speed is great for navigation, buttons were already mentioned for all new features added to it verses the older ones. The lighting is great and I love the warm light for night reading as well as changing the screen from light to dark.As far as value for the money, I got mine for a deal because I got it on a promotional deal for $189 -$33 discount for trade in option of old kindle, and the great deal is under that promotion you were not required to send in the old one, so keeping the old one in case something happens to my new one. So, to me I think that the retail price of $280 + dollars is a little steep but I guess when you factor in the quality of the manufacturing of the Kindle, and all the perks that come with it, it’s considered a fair price. I mean am i-phone is expensive if you pay outright for it, but Apple makes a quality product too. Overall I am very satisfied with my purchase and would recommend the Amazon Kindle Colorsoft to anyone.” – Knight-In-Shining-Armor
“I have been a Kindle user for over 20 years and love these devices. I left my Kindle Paperwhite in a foreign country, and it didn’t make sense to have it shipped back to me, so I went looking for a new Kindle. I had been following the release of the Kindle Colorsoft before I lost my device. I thought it was priced high and saw there were issues with the yellow bar, but it still looked like a good iteration of Kindle technology. When I lost my Kindle Paperwhite, there happened to be a sale on the new Kindle Colorsoft. I’ve had the Colorsoft for just under a month and have read multiple books on it. Here are my thoughts:
Overall Quality: I think this is a great Kindle. The software works well, and it feels like an upgrade over the Kindle Paperwhite I lost. I like the 7-inch size of the Colorsoft—it’s easy to hold and doesn’t feel heavy. I’ve never had issues with Kindles breaking or lacking durability, and the Colorsoft feels just as sturdy as other versions I’ve owned.
The Color Display: When I was showing my new Kindle to one of my children, he remarked, “The color makes it look like artwork”—it wowed him. I really like the color display. Yes, the colors are muted, but that’s what makes it so appealing, in my opinion. I’ve read picture books with my Colorsoft and thought the colors were excellent. If I wanted more vibrant colors, I would read on my phone or tablet, but I use my Kindle specifically to avoid reading on those devices. One review I read mentioned that the Colorsoft was easy on the eyes, and I agree.
Price: I think the price is too high at full retail. I wouldn’t have bought it at the original price, but I was able to get it on sale and also do a trade-in, which finally made it worthwhile for me.
Yellow Bar Issue: I haven’t encountered this problem yet. I’ll update my review if it appears.
Overall: I really like the Colorsoft and gave it 5 stars because it’s a great device and I was able to purchase it at a reasonable price.” – D
