Meta Glasses Will No Longer Record If the Capture Light Is Modified or Removed

Meta plans to roll out an update that disables the camera on its smart glasses if they detect that the capture light has been physically tampered with.

Meta's AI smart glasses have raised privacy concerns over surreptitious recording. The glasses feature an LED indicator that lights up whenever the wearer is recording, but users can easily cover it. The  second-generation Ray-Ban Meta glasses  disable the camera when the capture light is hidden; however, last month, a journalist found that modders could physically  remove the LED  for a price without breaking the camera.

In yet another attempt to close these loopholes, Meta says it will roll out a software update "to disable the camera if they detect the LED was physically tampered with or destroyed." The update is mandatory and is currently rolling out to all users, Meta tells 9to5Google.

In addition, Meta will remove posts across its apps that promote or advertise capture-light tampering services. Account bans and legal action may follow, if needed, the company adds.

The update arrives weeks after Meta launched its own brand of stylish, colorful smart glasses . Starting at $299, they expand the lineup beyond Ray-Ban - and Oakley-branded glasses.

With its growing range, the company has also recently begun  nudging  users towards its $20-per-month Meta One Premium subscription by capping the Conversational Focus feature at just three free hours per month.
