Report: Next Meta Quest VR Headset To Get Major Micro-OLED Upgrade

The next Meta Quest headset could represent a huge visual upgrade over the Meta Quest 3 thanks to display panel technology micro-OLED.

Current Meta Quest headsets use LCD based technology with a universal backlight, making truly deep black levels impossible to achieve. Micro-OLED provides effectively flawless blacks by default, and will be used in an upcoming headset according to a report from VRcoast .

It should even prove a major upgrade over the discontinued Meta Quest Pro , which has Mini LED panels with a zoned backlight system. But in microOLED panels light control is handled per pixel, eliminating bloom.

It will be far from the first VR headset to use this technology, though. The Apple Vision Pro and Samsung Galaxy XR do too.

The report suggests the panels will be of 2560 x 2560 pixel resolution, per eye, and come from supplier SeeYA. They will be capable of 1800 nit peak brightness, although the actual perceived brightness will likely be far lower if the headset uses pancake lenses, which are not particularly light-efficient.

The most closely comparable display listed on the SeeYa website is a 1.03-inch screen panel.

MicroOLED is one of the contributing factors to the very high cost of the Samsung Galaxy XR and Apple Vision Pro, but the eagle-eyed may have already spotted this is a somewhat lower-spec version of the tech.

The Samsung Galaxy XR headset has resolution of 3,552 x 3,840 pixels per eye. That's more than 27 million pixels total, to the 13 million pixels total of this proposed Meta Quest spec.

It won't offer the same kind of visual acuity, then, but also will reportedly cost much less too. Last year, a $1,000 target for an upcoming Meta Quest headset was mooted. That was, however, before RAM and storage prices had blown up in quite the way they have since.

Is This The Meta Quest 4?

There's also the question of whether this will be the headset with a rather different design to current models, a plan that has been subject to multiple recent rumours. It's a headset with a separate "puck" that holds the device's processor and other core tech, allowing for significantly lower weight and bulk for the main headset part — and therefore greater comfort.

Its estimated weight, at least for the part worn on the head, is under 110g. The Meta Quest 3 weighs 515g, making them closer to the Meta Ray-Ban Display glasses, which weigh up to 70g. Recent reports have suggested this lighter headset is planned for a 2027 release.
