Audio-Technica Reveals Two New Shotgun Microphones For Video Creators

AUDIO-TECHNICA ATV-SG1 Lifestyle

A shotgun mic is the best way to focus on sound and filter out unwanted noise. These two new models from Audio-Technica are designed for content creators and videographers looking to upgrade their audio quality.

Japan's Audio-Technica has announced the launch of two new shotgun microphones desinged for videographers and content creators. The ATV-SG1 and ATV-SG1LE have the same solid-mesh style of Audio-Technica's classic 20 series and both of the new models are designed to deliver natural and high-resolution sound, partly due to a newly designed 14mm large-diameter diaphragm.

Shotgun microphones are probably one of the best ways to upgrade locations sound by capturing clear audio because the design beams in on the sound source while also blocking out surrounding noises. Shotgun microphones are highly directional and can isolate dialog well.

Housed in a highly directional 100mm acoustic tube, the new microphones can focus in on the sound source while omitting unwanted background noise that an omnidirectional microphone might pick up. Both of the new models also include an integrated shock mount that can help reduce any noise caused by camera handling.

The ATV-SG1LE is the stripped-down version and offers batteryless operation. It connects to its host camera using a 3.5mm TRS cable.

Plug-In Power

The ATV-SG1LE is the entry-level model and is aimed at content creators who want to boost the quality of their audio. It can be plugged into a DSLR, mirrorless SLR or other camera using the supplied 3.5mm TRS cable.

Unlike typical plug-in microphones, which can sacrifice performance for convenience, Audio-Technica says the ATV-SG1LE's unique plug-in power circuitry means it has the professional sound characteristics of a battery-powered model, including an extended frequency range and high maximum SPL. The microphone is also compact and has a diameter of 35mm and a length of 127.1mm.

The more expensive ATV-SG1 model comes with a few extra features that can give videographers greater control over their audio quality. There's a low-cut filter switch to reduce noise created by wind, traffic, HVAC systems and other low-frequency sources, plus a knob for stepless and on-the-fly adjustment of gain levels.

Additionally, the ATV-SG1 has a safety track feature that records the main audio level to the left channel and a backup track at -6 dB to the right channel. This feature can help content creators to capture clean and usable recordings, even if there are unexpected volume spikes during the shoot.

Built-In Battery

With its external input jack and accessory shoe, the ATV-SG1 lets users mount a wireless lavalier microphone receiver or plug in a powered wired lavalier microphone to record simultaneously with the shotgun microphone. It also has a headphone jack with a volume adjustment knob for real-time and zero-latency monitoring.
