Your room matters more than your soundbar or speakers—here's how to make the most of the audio you already have
Before you spend another dollar upgrading your audio gear, consider this: the room you're listening in might be holding back the sound far more than your equipment ever could.
Optimize your soundbar placement
Small adjustments make a big difference in clarity
Most people set up a soundbar once and never think about it again, but placement has an outsized effect on how it actually sounds. The first thing to check is height. A soundbar should sit at or just below ear level when you're seated, ideally directly beneath the TV and not tucked inside a cabinet, where the cabinet's lip can muffle the drivers and trap sound waves before they reach you. If your soundbar has to sit higher or lower than ideal, many models include a calibration mode or EQ setting specifically designed to compensate for that.
Distance from the back wall matters too. Pushing a soundbar flush against a wall, especially one with upward or side-firing drivers for Dolby Atmos or DTS:X, can cause reflected sound to arrive muddled or overly bass-heavy. Pulling it out even a few inches, or angling it slightly, often clears up the midrange and makes dialogue easier to understand.
Symmetry is another overlooked factor. If the soundbar is centered on the TV stand but the room itself isn't symmetrical, with a doorway or open hallway on one side, the soundstage can feel lopsided. Walking the room and listening from your usual seat while making small position changes is the most reliable way to find the sweet spot, since measurements alone don't account for how a specific space reflects sound.
Finally, don't ignore the manufacturer's setup app if one exists. Many current soundbars use a microphone-based calibration process that sends test tones through the room and adjusts the EQ automatically based on what it hears.

If you're running a dedicated speaker setup rather than a single soundbar, the gains from proper configuration are even larger, because there are more variables to get wrong. Start with the basic geometry: front left and right speakers should form roughly an equilateral triangle with your primary listening position, angled inward, or "toed in," so they point slightly toward your ears rather than firing straight ahead. This single adjustment sharpens stereo imaging more than almost any other tweak.
Center channel placement deserves equal attention, since it carries the bulk of dialogue in movies and shows. It should align horizontally with the left and right speakers and avoid being recessed deep inside an entertainment center, which can muffle vocal clarity in exactly the frequency range where speech lives.
For surround or height speakers, height and angle matter more than exact distance. Surround speakers generally perform best slightly above ear level and aimed down toward the listening area, while height or Atmos modules benefit from reflecting cleanly off the ceiling rather than being blocked by light fixtures or ceiling fans.
Subwoofer placement is its own challenge, because bass behaves unpredictably depending on room dimensions. A trick worth trying is the "subwoofer crawl," where you place the sub in your normal seating position, then crawl around the room listening for where bass sounds tightest and least boomy. That spot is often the best place for the subwoofer itself. Once positioning is dialed in, running your receiver's built-in room correction software, such as Audyssey, YPAO, or Dirac, can fine-tune levels and delay times automatically.

Even a perfectly placed, well-calibrated system will sound compromised in a room working against it. Hard, parallel surfaces, like bare walls, tile floors, and large windows, cause sound waves to bounce around uncontrolled, creating echo, harshness, and muddy bass that no amount of equipment can fully fix. The good news is that improving room acoustics doesn't require a dedicated studio build-out.
Soft furnishings do more heavy lifting than people expect. Thick curtains, area rugs, upholstered furniture, and bookshelves packed with books all absorb and scatter sound in ways that reduce harsh reflections. A room with bare walls and hardwood floors will almost always sound brighter and more fatiguing than the same room with a rug underfoot and curtains on the windows, even with identical speakers.
Bass response is particularly tied to room shape and size. Small or oddly proportioned rooms tend to develop bass buildup in corners, which is why subwoofers often sound boomy in one position and surprisingly controlled just a foot or two away. Bass traps, which are foam or fiberglass panels designed specifically for corners, can noticeably tame it if rearranging furniture isn't enough.
For people serious about getting more out of their existing setup, acoustic panels placed at the first reflection points, the spots on side walls and ceilings where sound first bounces before reaching your ears, can meaningfully tighten imaging and reduce harshness. These don't need to be expensive; even DIY panels made from rigid fiberglass and fabric perform well.
The broader point is that acoustic treatment addresses problems at their source, rather than asking your gear to compensate for them. A modest speaker system in a well-treated room will consistently outperform premium equipment in an untreated one.
