OM System is building a compact, retro mirrorless camera. It couldn’t come at a better time

The secret is out: in an abnormally revealing teaser, OM System has revealed that a new compact, retro mirrorless camera is coming on September 09. But while the teaser has longtime fans hoping for a revival of the beloved PEN F series, the upcoming launch comes at a time when reports suggest the company's mirrorless sales have dropped.
In a teaser revealed earlier this week , OM System shared a glimpse of the back and top sections of what looks like a retro, compact mirrorless camera. The first teaser revealed far more than most, without using the usual tactic to cast the camera in shadow. The rangefinder-style viewfinder had many fans hoping the camera is a refresh of the long-requested PEN series.

Then, a second teaser seemed to hint at a PEN legacy even more, displaying the 1959 Olympus PEN and the 2009 PEN E-P1 (the brand's first digital mirrorless).
The teased camera will be the brand's first major camera launch of 2026 , as the company hasn't launched a new model outside of the specialized OM-3 Astro and OM-1 Mark II Infrared . While it's not unusual for OM System to launch only one camera a year, the teaser comes as the company is facing a sales slump.
OM System isn't a publicly traded company, so unlike Canon, Nikon, Sony and Fujifilm, there's no publicly available insight on the company's sales and profits. But a recent report in Japan suggests that the company's camera sales have dipped by 10,000 compared to last year, with an operating profit in the red to the tune of -¥1.6 billion – about -$9.9 million / -£7.4 million / -AU$13.9 million.
That echoes an earlier industry report ranking Japan's top camera brands by the number of cameras shipped, which also said that OM System shipped 150,000 cameras, a drop of about 10,000 compared to the year before. That list showed Ricoh overtaking OM System, but more due to Ricoh's sales numbers tripling, likely due to the popularity of the Ricoh GR IV series .

OM System has used a 20MP sensor on its Micro Four Thirds line since 2016, moving through two sensor variants with the same resolution in the past decade. While OM System says sensor development is ongoing, the company has focused on building rugged, outdoor cameras taking advantage of the Micro Four Thirds' more compact designs, well-loved stabilization system, and the brand's computational photography prowess.
If the teased camera is in fact a refresh of the PEN line, I can see such a camera boosting the brand's camera sales, regardless of whether or not the upcoming launch still uses a 20MP sensor. The PEN series is well loved, yet the last time the company launched a PEN with worldwide availability was still in the company's Olympus days, back in 2020. (The Olympus PEN E-P7 launched in 2021, but was limited to Asia and Europe.)
Regardless, I think OM System fans are eagerly awaiting whatever's next on September 09.
