I’ve always said that the best camera gear is the stuff you actually use. You don’t need a massive cinema rig or a heavy-duty drone to get shots that look professional. Sometimes, all it takes is a little creativity and a camera that can handle a bit of a toss. I’m a huge fan of finding those “cheat codes” for filmmaking that anyone can pull off with just a GoPro and some confidence.

The “Chuck and Catch” is one of my favorites. It creates this dizzying, immersive spin that’s perfect for transitions or just adding some energy to your travel reel. I was out in a park with some friends, surrounded by these beautiful cherry blossoms, and the lighting was hitting that perfect late-afternoon glow. I knew I wanted a shot that felt as dynamic as the scene looked.

The mission was simple: capture the scale of the trees while keeping the focus on the moment.

  • Grab your GoPro: I usually shoot on the Hero 12, but any recent model will do.

  • Angle it Downward: This is key. Most people want to look up, but angling the lens down gives you that unique, spinning perspective as it rotates in the air.

  • Hit Record and Toss: Give it a gentle underhand toss with a bit of a spin.

The result? Incredible. The camera catches this beautiful, swirling view of the blossoms and the sky as it flies, before landing right back in your hands. It’s a shot that looks like it took hours of planning and a lot of technical skill, but it’s really just about the timing and the “chase” for that perfect rotation.

Don’t be afraid to experiment with different speeds and heights. Just make sure you’ve got a solid grip for the catch! This trick is a great reminder that you don’t need to be an expert to create something epic. You just need to be willing to take a little risk and see where the shot takes you.
