I Tried This Simple Camera Trick In My Van To Get A Hollywood Cinematic Shot

I drove up into the mountains seeking the perfect golden hour light over the valley. Waking up in the back of my van surrounded by towering pines and jagged, sunlit peaks is incredible, but standard landscape shots do not always convey the true scale of the moment. I needed a shot that felt grand.

I decided to film a quick Vertigo effect right from the back doors of my rig.

To pull this off without a massive camera rig, all you need is a smartphone. The technique is a classic dolly zoom. You physically walk backward away from your subject while pulling the zoom lens in at the exact same speed. The result? Mind-blowing. The foreground frame expands wide while the distant mountain range stays locked in place, creating an incredible warping depth effect.

Executing this in a tight space required precise footwork. I started close to the bed sheet, set my focal point on the distant sunlit peaks, and took smooth, deliberate steps backward down the center aisle of the van while zooming in. Maintaining a steady hand while balancing on a narrow floor is half the battle. If your walking speed does not match your zoom rate, the horizon warps unevenly and breaks the illusion. I dialed in the timing, smoothed out the motion, and let the morning light do the heavy lifting.

You do not need thousands of dollars in cinema gear to pull off dramatic visual tricks. Master the basic principles of motion, practice your camera control, and use the natural light around you.

The next time you pull up to an epic view, step back, line up your shot, and give this technique a try.
