New phones and laptops can handle increasingly high wattages to give your device a quicker charge. Yet modern electronics don't always come with a power adapter. To make sure you're taking advantage of those speeds, you'll  want a fast charger. These are usually rated between 30 and 140 watts, so you'll want to match the power of your charger to the maximum wattage your phone, tablet or other device can handle. There are other factors to consider as well, like multiple ports and simultaneous charging — all of which we map out below. But first, here are our picks for the four best fast chargers money can buy, based on our real-world testing.

It's tiny yet mighty at 30W. It comes in cute colors (green, blue, white and purple in addition to the standard black) and costs just $17. There's very little not to love here, particularly since it just works. When I charged my big power bank with it (which can draw up to 140W) it pumped out a steady 28 watts. After a few minutes, the brick felt warm but never alarmingly hot. For smartphones and tablets, it merrily chugged out between 20 and 25 watts and barely got warm. 

The size and shape are reminiscent of those little white blocks Apple used to package with everything, but unlike those 5W cubes, this one delivers a much faster charge. Plus the prongs fold down for easier packing.

A little blue face smiles at you when you plug in Anker's 45W smart display charger . That's not enough to make it a recommendation — but its roster of other features are. At 45W, it can dispatch plenty of power to a smartphone or tablet. It even did a fine job of refilling my MacBook at a steady 44-watt clip. 

The wall prongs rotate in three directions to point out of the back, from the side or fold into the adapter for travel. That gives you a few more options when plugging it into the wall, particularly if you want to be able to read the display from different angles. 

That display will identify which model of iPhone or iPad you plug in — not a necessary bit of info, but it was a neat trick nonetheless. With a tap on the capacitive-touch button, you can see the temperature gauge, which uses charming little animations and the little blue face to tell you if things are nice and cool or getting a little too hot. 

An optional Care mode (selected with double tap on the button) will charge your devices at a cooler (read: slower) rate, which might be easier on your battery over the long term. Anker obviously designed the charger for iPhones — just look at how well the orange option matches the iPhone 17's Cosmic Orange colorway — but it happily enabled Fast Charging 2.0 on my Samsung handset.

The Baseus PicoGo AE11 measures about the size of many 45W single-port adapters, but this one can deliver up to 67 watts. As always, that wattage output is a combined total. Each USB-C port can push 65W individually while the USB-A slot is rated up to 33W.

I used one Type-C port to refill a big 200W power bank and it steadily delivered around 64W watts. When I added an iPhone, the output switched to around 45 watts to the bank and 18 watts to the phone. I added a small LED light to the USB-A port and the wattage to both the battery and phone remained steady. 

The brick got pretty warm with all three devices plugged in, but didn't get overly hot. Design wise, it's pretty basic: a black square with foldable prongs. The ports have little yellow accents which are nice. But you'd buy this for its low-price performance, not its looks.

Ugreen's tiny, 45W Nexode Air Slim wall adapter looks uncannily like an old school Zippo lighter. Not only is that delightful, but it's also pretty convenient. If you've ever had to hunt for an alternate outlet because the charger you wanted to use was too bulky to fit between the couch and the wall, this one should do the trick. 

I tested it on a larger power bank and my wattage meter measured a steady 43 watts. Using it to fill a Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra enabled that phone's Super Fast Charging 2.0 mode and an iPhone 16 took in a stable 22 watts. It did get pretty hot when it was filling the battery bank at top speed. I'd recommend keeping this one around as a convenient (and neat looking) flat wall charger.

If you find yourself needing to replace the power adapter that came with your MacBook, or you just want a spare, I suggest this block from Mophie over the one from Apple. The Mophie Speedport costs the same $100, has the same 140W rating and maintains the clean, minimalist Apple aesthetic. It's similar in size, but is actually a tad narrower to be not quite as much of a plug hog. Best of all, instead of just a single USB-C port, you get three. 

Two of the ports are rated at 140W and one is rated 100W. But, as I've confirmed in my testing, all multiport chargers drop in efficiency when more than one port is in use. With just my (near-dead) MacBook plugged in, it supplied over 100W. Once my laptop was charged to around 75 percent, I connected a Galaxy S26 Ultra to the other 140W port. The Speedport enabled Super Fast Charging 3.0 (Samsung's term for 60W charging) while maintaining a stream of power to my MacBook and barely getting warm.

This travel charger from Satechi is the same size as Apple's 140W power adapter. It gives you four total ports, two rated at 140W and two rated at 45W (though I wish those ratings were written on the device itself). Plenty of 140W fast chargers have four ports, but this one also lets you swap out the two-prong plug for three different (included) international plugs . There's one for the UK (type G), the EU (type C) and AU (type I). 

Sliding the plugs in and out is easy enough, but it does take some force. There's a switch to slide back while pressing forward on the plug and it took me a few tries to get it right. This isn't a deal breaker; I'd rather have the connection be more secure than have the plug accidentally come loose. 

It was able to deliver the full 140W when a single device was plugged in, but the charger dropped more than other similarly specced adapters when I plugged in more than one device. The difference between it and similar chargers was only around ten watts, but that was enough to notice in a few different tests. It also costs a little more than other 140W four-port chargers — not surprising considering the additional plug accessories. If you're not traveling around the world, you may as well save some money with other options. But if you're planning a trip abroad, this is a good-looking block that will capably keep all your gadgets charged up.

Things to consider when buying a fast charger 

Don't waste money on too much wattage 

Wattage (W) is the amount of power a given adapter can pump out. You can think of it as a charger's "speed." For example, a 45W charger can charge a phone faster than a 5W charger. But using a 165W charger on a phone that can only charge at 45W speeds is overkill. Devices are designed to only take in what they can handle, so a phone will draw its max wattage and ignore any extra wattage on offer. 

Since the main factor influencing the price of a fast charger is wattage, it makes sense to only buy what your phone, tablet or computer can draw. One reason you may want to overshoot that number is if you want to charge more than one device at a time. 

Charging though multiple ports will slow your speeds 

If you want to charge more than one gadget on a single fast charger, you'll want one with a higher wattage rating. The listed rating of any charger is the combined wattage it can put out at one time. Say you have a 140W charger with three ports. Using one port will pass along the max 140W to your computer. But plug your phone into one of those ports at the same time, and the outgoing wattage will drop. A lot.

In my tests, the output dropped more than I expected. I plugged a high-capacity battery into a 140W charger and my wattage meter showed it drawing the full amount. When I plugged a phone into another port, the wattage dropped to between 60 and 90 watts for the high-draw battery and about 10 watts for the phone. Those rates don't equal 140W. That's something to keep in mind if you need to charge something quickly — just plug in the critical item and wait to charge other devices when speed isn't the priority.  

Know your USB ports

The latest USB-C standard can shuttle up to 240W through its ports and cables. Only the Type C shape (USB-C) supports those standards. For comparison, the USB Type A ports max out at around 10W of power. However, just because the USB standard supports 240W, the highest you'll typically find for a single port on any fast charger is 140W. That's likely because 240W is incredibly fast and would take a lot of expensive heat management tech to operate. Plus, few devices can charge at that rate anyway.

Fast charger + slow cable = slow charging

Remember the weakest link analogy. If your laptop can handle 140W charging speeds and you dutifully use a 140W charger, you won't get that high speed you paid for using a cable rated for 60W. Some fast chargers ship with a cable, others don't. If you have to buy a new cable, you're best off grabbing one with a high wattage rating so you don't compromise speeds.  

How we test fast chargers

Everything we test at Yahoo Tech starts with research. I looked at brands I trust for quality gear and read reviews on shopping sites as well as testing results from other publications. I gathered up around ten fast chargers that had good ratings and recommendations and tested them in my home office.

I used two simple USB-C wattage meters to make sure the advertised wattage output translated to real world use. I used each fast charger to refill a slate of devices including my MacBook Pro, an iPad Air, an iPhone 16 and iPhone 15, a Galaxy S23 Ultra and a Galaxy S26 Ultra. I also filled up a few high-capacity power banks capable of drawing 140W. I checked the fast chargers for overheating over time and looked at the design, build quality and any extra features. Finally, I compared the performance and perks to the price to come up with the best picks. 

A few chargers are still en route to my office and on deck for testing. Once I test those, I'll update this guide with the results. 

Fast charger FAQs

What is a fast charger?

Fast chargers are wall adapters that use a regulator to convert the high voltage AC electrical power from your wall outlet to lower voltage DC power that phones and computers use. Internal chips communicate with your device to deliver the best charging speeds while protecting from overheating. Most fast chargers include one or more USB-C ports.

The "fast" designation technically means any wall charger that can deliver more than 5 watts (those tiny white cubes Apple used to ship with every product are 5 watts). For this guide, I only considered blocks that can deliver 30 watts or more. The maximum per-port wattage rating you'll find for fast chargers is 140 watts. Some chargers are rated higher, but that's the combined wattage, each port maxes out at 140W. The USB-C standard supports up to 240 watts, but fast chargers that can deliver that aren't available yet. 

What is Power Delivery (PD)?

Power Delivery is a USB specification (USB PD) that can supply up to 240 watts of power over a USB-C cable and connector. Just note that connectors labeled with PD will not necessarily supply or accept 240W. Many are rated at 140W and others at 100W or 60W (which is typically the minimum wattage for connections designated as PD). 

What is GaN?

GaN stands for Gallium nitride which is a semiconductor material used in the voltage regulation process inside fast chargers (and lots of other technologies ). Thanks to its structure, it can support larger electrical fields in a smaller space. That means chargers that use GaN instead of silicon can handle more power transfer in a smaller physical space. In short, GaN chargers deliver higher wattages in smaller adapters.
