In the battle between utility and portability, sometimes laptops have to sacrifice ports and connectivity. And now that iPads are as powerful as some desktop computers and the smartphone is the new tablet, maximizing the one or two USB-C ports you're given is critical. 

With a good USB-C hub, you can add a monitor (or two) as well as memory cards, keyboards, external drives, webcams and more through one slim connection. They even deliver power at the same time. After testing nearly 20 options, we think UGreen Revodok Pro and the Anker 555 8-in-1 hubs are the best USB-C hubs you can grab right now. This well-designed hub has an ideal number and variety of ports — and the price is reasonable (particularly when it's on sale). UGreen's Revodok Pro 109 USB-C hub has eight downstream ports, including micro and standard SD slots, three USB-A ports, an Ethernet connection and a 4K @ 60Hz HDMI hookup. There's one USB-C data port, the other is the hub's 100W power delivery connection.  

The downstream USB-C is rated USB 3.2, which supports 10Gbps data transfer rates, and it was plenty quick in my tests. My external monitor looked smooth and the Ethernet connection provided the fastest speeds my gateway could pump out. The SD slots are nicely designed and don't rely on a spring mechanism to eject, which I find more reliable. 

My only gripe with the hub is a complaint I have with most hubs: Why can't there be just one more usable USB-C port? Most modern accessories use that type now — both my webcam and keyboard are Type-C — so I'd love to see one of the Type-A connectors upgraded. Still, the three USB-A ports are plentiful and one supports 10Gbps rates. If you're more interested in monitors than data card slots, check out UGreen's 8-in-1 Revodok hub. This is very similar to our top pick — but the Anker 555 8-in-1 just missed the top spot for two minor reasons: A shorter host cable and one fewer USB-A port. The two are fairly similar in price, with only a $5 price difference (and both of them are often discounted). The UGreen model also just feels more premium than this one. 

But Anker's 555 performed well in my tests, reliably supporting a 4K monitor, Ethernet connection and my keyboard and mouse. Again, I wish it had one more usable USB-C port, but it's an overall solid hub. If this one happens to be on sale and the UGreen 109 model isn't, you may as well snap this one up.

Later-generation Type-C USB ports can handle just about anything — 4K monitors and webcams, high-speed data transfers and, of course, peripherals like mice, keyboards and lights. That's why I'm always happy to see a USB-C hub that's stocked with those ports. 

The USB 4 Dual Display 8-in-1 Hub from EZQuest has seven downstream USB-C ports, and four of those support the USB4 standard. While that standard can deliver speeds of up to 40Gbps, the ports here are at the lower end, supporting 10Gbps each. Still, this hub can run two 4K monitors at 60Hz refresh rates and I found the data speeds were plenty fast, transferring a gigabyte of photos to an external drive in a couple of seconds. 

The 100W power delivery port sends 77 watts to your computer or tablet and uses the rest to support the hub itself, as well as deliver power to your other peripherals (up to 15W per port). It's one of the few hubs that allows me to plug in everything I have at once: a keyboard, mouse, 4K monitor, light ring, Rode mic, 4K webcam and an external hard drive, plus power.

The build is pretty lightweight, which makes it easy to travel with but can make it a little fiddly to get positioned right on the desk. It also has a plasticy feel, but the performance and heat dissipation is great, so they may have picked the right materials. The only real drawback here is the $150 price tag — but for the professional who has a lot of upgraded accessories, this is a no-disappointment pick.

The Satechi OntheGo 7-in-1 hub might be the closest you can get to magically adding more ports to your MacBook. It magnetically attaches to the back of an iPhone using the MagSafe connection, or you can mount it to the back of your laptop using the included 3M adhesive ring.

The little round puck gives you ports for an HDMI monitor (4k @ 60Hz), microSD and standard SD card readers, an Ethernet connection and two USB-A accessories. The passthrough power delivery will send up to 80 watts to your laptop. There's no USB-C port, but if you just need something cleverly designed to add monitor capabilities to your MacBook or iPad Pro, or SD card reading/writing to your iPhone, this will serve you well.

What to consider when buying a USB-C hub

USB-C hubs are a great way to add a few accessories to your laptop, such as external drives, a wired mouse or keyboard, SD card readers and perhaps a monitor or an Ethernet connection. They're portable so you can put them in a laptop bag when you leave your desk. (If you want something that will stay put and allows for multiple monitors and connections, you might want a docking station instead.) Here are a few things to know about USB-C features before you buy. 

Ports

The most important port is the one on your computer or tablet. The connector you use for your USB-C hub should support data and power. Some USB-C ports are only for charging, and some have lower specifications than others. When you're picking which space on your laptop to use, go for the one with the highest rating. They should be at least USB 3.0 or higher (USB 3.1, USB 3.2, USB4 or Thunderbolt 3, 4 or 5). The higher the specifications, the higher the data speeds.

Two important notes on speed. First, data speeds are only as fast as the slowest item in the chain — so if your portable SSD unit maxes out at USB 2.0, having a USB 3.2 hub won't do you much good. And secondly, while anything above USB 3.2 tends to severely ramp up the cost, most folks won't need the likes of Thunderbolt 4 speeds unless they're, say, moving giant video files from portable storage devices. That said, it doesn't hurt to future-proof a purchase by getting a slightly better spec than you need right now.

Next, you'll want to make sure the hub itself has the ports you need. Here are some of the most common ones:

  • HDMI: These connect to monitors and have different ratings. HDMI 1.4 only has a 30Hz refresh rate with 4K video. HDMI 2.0 ports can output 4K video at 60Hz and HDMI 2.1 will handle 4K at up to 120Hz. Lower refresh rates can make your screen feel laggy and make your mouse appear glitchy. 

  • Memory card slots: Good for transferring images from cameras. Some hubs have a microSD slot, a standard SD slot or both. 

  • USB-A: Many new laptops lack this older port type. USB-C hubs with USB Type-A slots let you connect mice, keyboards and other peripherals. 

  • USB-C: The most versatile port. It's used for external and thumb drives, wired mice and keyboards, monitors, streaming controllers and more. Again, what a port can handle is limited by its type. Some USB-C ports are power only or support lower data rates.  

  • Ethernet: A wired network connection may be faster than some Wi-Fi speeds. It's also more secure. 

  • 3.5mm jack: Many laptops lack this crucial hole for wired headphone connections.   

One last thing to note about ports is how many you actually get. A hub may be listed as "7-in-1" but that doesn't mean you'll be able to plug in seven different accessories. One of the USB-C ports is almost always used for delivering power only. I've even seen some hubs that count the host cable among the hub's connections. I've noted the number of downstream ports of each hub to help make things clearer. 

Power 

Most hubs let you use passthrough charging. That means you run power to the hub and it'll deliver that power to your laptop through the attached cable. This is useful if you're dealing with a tablet or a laptop with just a single port. But I find that using this feature makes the hubs run hot — so if you have the option, I recommend running power directly to your laptop when it needs a recharge.  

Host cable 

The host cable is built into the hub and connects to your computer. Some are short, which may keep your desk looking tidier, but I prefer the hubs that have a longer host cable to allow me to park it in more places, including tucking it behind my laptops. 

How we test USB-C hubs

All the testing we do begins with research, reading product descriptions and reviews to find the brands and models that seem worthy. To arrive at my selections, I looked for hubs that would help someone get through an average day of work. Once I picked out a dozen or so models, I had them shipped to me and tested them using my work computer and some of my usual accessories over a few weeks.

For reference, I use an M1 MacBook Pro and have a 4K Dell monitor, a USB-C keyboard, a USB-A mouse and a 4K webcam. I also tested the hubs with a streaming light, a Sandisk thumbdrive, Samsung T7 external drive and some cheapo wired headphones. I evaluated how the monitor looked, how the mouse acted, how well the webcam connected and how fast data transferred through the hub. Then I factored in the overall design and price to pick the winners.
