AMD RDNA 5 GPU Boost Clock May Reach 3.4GHz, up 14% on the RX 9070 XT

AMD's next-generation RDNA 5 cards will almost certainly crest 3GHz with their stock boost clock for the first time. According to VideoCardz , new rumors suggest AMD is targeting up to 3.4GHz with its upcoming GPUs, a 14% bump over the current RX 9070 XT's clock speed and more than a 36% increase over the 7900XTX, still AMD's fastest pure raster GPU.

Some rumors have been swirling about RDNA 5 cards hitting 4GHz, but serial leaker and rumor merchant Kepler_L2 says otherwise. In a recent forum post, they suggested they'd heard AMD was targeting between 3.1GHz and 3.4GHz with its next-generation cards based on the RDNA 5 architecture. This is more typical of inter-generational improvements and would still lift AMD card boost clocks over 3GHz for the first time.

It's unlikely that all RDNA 5 cards will be able to hit these kinds of boost clocks . AMD's top-clocked mobile part, the 7600M, reaches just 2.4GHz, while its desktop counterpart is 2755MHz. Mobile RDNA 5 GPUs will likely have lower clocks, and we may only see these kinds of peak clocks on mid-range desktop chips. A hypothetical 10070 XT might use the more modest 3.1GHz target.

All of this is still purely in the realm of rumor, though, as AMD has made no consumer announcements for RDNA 5. Technically, the first GPU to use the architecture has been spotted, but it's in the Samsung Exynos 2700 smartphone SoC , so hardly a gaming powerhouse.

For actual gaming mobile GPUs and desktop graphics cards based on RDNA 5, we're almost certainly looking at the middle to end of 2027 at the earliest. Some board partners have even pointed to early 2028 as the likely debut, with a CES 2028 unveiling in January.

That would be a real shame, but considering the price of current-generation GPUs, maybe it is better to wait for prices to stabilize a little before something even bigger, better, and probably more costly is released.
