Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Google Cloud have jointly launched a networking solution designed to address longstanding challenges in multicloud architecture.

The new service brings together AWS Interconnect - multicloud and Google Cloud's Cross-Cloud Interconnect.

It provides organisations with a method for establishing private, high-speed network connections between Google Cloud and AWS.

The solution introduces an open specification for network interoperability, which allows customers to automate and accelerate provisioning of dedicated bandwidth between the two cloud providers.

According to Google, users can now establish connectivity within minutes through their chosen cloud console or API. This bypasses the previous requirement for manual configuration of physical links and hardware that often resulted in extended lead times.

Google Cloud cloud networking general manager and vice president Rob Enns said: "We are excited about this collaboration which enables our customers to move their data and applications between clouds with simplified global connectivity and enhanced operational effectiveness.

"Today's announcement further delivers on Google Cloud's Cross-Cloud Network solution focused on delivering an open and unified multicloud experience for customers."

AWS initially proposed the development of a unified interoperability specification with the intention that it be accessible to any cloud provider. Together with Google Cloud, it has made this specification available as an open standard.

The offering integrates AWS infrastructure with Google Cloud's Cross-Cloud Network, removing direct management of physical resources and centralising network policy controls.

Technical measures for resilience include quad-redundancy via physically separate interconnect facilities and routing equipment. Both providers operate continuous monitoring systems to identify and remedy potential issues proactively.

AWS network services vice president Robert Kennedy said: "This collaboration between AWS and Google Cloud represents a fundamental shift in multicloud connectivity.

"By defining and publishing a standard that removes the complexity of any physical components for customers, with high availability and security fused into that standard, customers no longer need to worry about any heavy lifting to create their desired connectivity."

Recently, Google announced plans to invest $40bn in Texas by 2027, with a focus on expanding its cloud and AI infrastructure.
