TCL's Nxtpaper tech has been brought to tablets and smartphones of various sizes over the years, and now it's coming to its smallest tablet yet. The new TCL Tab 8 Nxtpaper is the brand's first product with an 8.7-inch HD display. That makes it a touch bigger than the latest iPad mini .
The tablet costs $199, and it's currently only available from Verizon. Android Authority says the tablet will soon also be on sale through Total Wireless.
The 8.7-inch HD display won't give you a fantastic resolution, but it allows you to switch between modes to help avoid eye-fatigue.
The tablet includes modes such as Color Paper, Ink, and Reading to adjust the screen's color temperature and help filter out blue light. It also has an anti-glare surface to make it easier to look at for longer periods.
There's a 2.4GHz octa-core MediaTek MT8755 chipset powering the Tab 8, alongside 4GB of RAM. That should be able to handle most apps, but don't expect incredibly fast performance.
You're limited to 64GB of storage. That won't feel like a lot as it has to host Android 15, and you'll want to download some apps to the tablet.. There's microSD support for up to 2TB, so you may want to expand it your storage if you're looking to do more than web browsing and reading on the Tab 8.
There's a 6,000mAh battery onboard, which TCL says should last for up to 16 hours of mixed usage. It's also 5G-ready, if you want mobile connectivity. On the rear you'll find an 8MP single camera, while the front selfie camera is a 5MP shooter.
PCMag reviewed the TCL Tab 10 Nxtpaper 5G giving it a three and a half out of five. Our review said, "The low-cost TCL Tab 10 Nxtpaper 5G tablet stands out for its paper-like display and swift 5G connectivity, though we wish it had better battery life and longer-term software support."
We'd expect a similar experience on this newer tablet, aside from the smaller design and display, but we won't know for sure until we get the Tab 8 Nxtpaper in for review at a later date.
