If staying on Windows 10, get Extended Security Updates and enable Firefox Sync before switching PCs.
Earlier this week, Windows 10 officially reached the end of its free support life . But just because Microsoft is pulling back doesn't mean your favorite browser is. There's good news for Firefox users still clinging to Windows 10.
In a blog post, Mozilla revealed that Windows 10 is still a primary platform for a lot of Firefox users. So, unlike how they handled older operating systems like Windows 7 and 8, it will continue to get the best from the Firefox team. That means Firefox on Windows 10 will still get the latest features—not only bug fixes and security patches—the exact same ones that Windows 11 users receive. At least for the time being, Firefox on Windows 10 will remain the full, up-to-date Firefox experience.
It should be noted, however, that staying on Windows 10 is not recommended by us or Mozilla. The company explains how your overall safety still relies on the operating system itself and all the other software and hardware you use. That's why, if your PC can handle it, it's recommended that you upgrade to Windows 11 . It's a free upgrade you can grab right from your Windows Update settings. Mozilla goes on to add that when you boot up Windows 11 for the first time, you'll find Firefox exactly where you left it, with all your history, bookmarks, and passwords intact.
Of course, not everyone has a PC that's capable of running Windows 11 (and some people just really don't want to upgrade). If you're sticking around, Mozilla says you should at least ensure you're getting Extended Security Updates (ESU) from Microsoft. These updates won't bring you shiny new Windows features or non-security bug fixes, but they are crucial for patching any future security holes found in Windows 10. You can get these for free by choosing the "Windows Backup" option when you enroll in the updates through your Windows Update settings.
If hardware is the thing holding you back from upgrading to Windows 11, you should make sure to enable Firefox Sync before switching to a new PC. This will ensure that all of your bookmarks, saved passwords, and browsing history are synced to the new install of Firefox. When you install Firefox on that brand-new PC, all you have to do is log in, and all your most important browsing data will quickly load in.
