Memory From China's CXMT Can't Quite Compete With the Big Players (Yet)
Memory from Chinese manufacturer CXMT is making inroads in Western markets, but it's not quite a direct substitute for traditional memory solutions. New testing by overclocker Safedisk found that CXMT memory chips are less consistent than those from SK Hynix, Micron, or Samsung, and that overclocking is very limited, Tom's Hardware reports .
CXMT (ChangXing Memory Technologies) began producing DDR5 memory in 2025 . Despite its lack of cutting-edge lithography machines, the incredible imbalance between supply and demand was enough to prompt it to enter the space. It has since started showing up in Western markets under a range of company banners and could be on track to match Micron's DDR5 production before the year is out.
While CXMT's chips might make up for some of the missing capacity that gamers and electronics manufacturers are clamoring for in 2026, they don't necessarily measure up in performance. Safedisk found it was possible to reach an 8,600 MT/s overclock on the 6,000 MT/s Kingbank kit, but several design weaknesses emerged. SK Hynix memory was faster on raw performance at the same speeds and timings, although Safedisk didn't release comparison benchmark numbers.
Voltage scaling is almost non-existent, so you can't just increase the voltage to improve stability and unlock additional performance. Tuning sub-timings doesn't work particularly well, either, meaning getting anything under the stock Column Address Strobe (CAS) speed is unlikely.
Safedisk also suggested that there was a lot more variation between sticks of the same type and speed, suggesting the silicon lottery will be particularly important with CXMT-based memory. That could also play a part in memory longevity, which for those buying expensive sticks—even at slight CXMT discounts—is something well worth considering. If the RAM pricing problem continues, nobody will want to buy more memory in a year or two.
None of this will be enticing to memory manufacturers or DRAM-starved consumers. But if this is what's available, and especially if it's available at more affordable pricing than that of the traditional three memory makers, CXMT may be able to carve out a niche for itself. If the RAM crunch persists for a few years, that's plenty of time for CXMT to improve its memory fabrication process and technologies to make its products more consistent and performative.
