Microsoft Brings New Automatic Recovery Tool to Windows 11 After Last Year's CrowdStrike Outage

Microsoft is adding a new feature to Windows 11 called Quick Machine Recovery (QMR), which is made to automatically revive PCs that cannot boot properly. QMR lets a Windows 11 device start in the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE), connect to the Internet, and download fixes from Microsoft for widespread boot issues, reducing the need for manual fixes.

This is meant to address problems like those seen during the mid-2024 CrowdStrike outage , when a faulty update prevented millions of Windows PCs and servers from booting properly. While that incident required devices to receive manual, one-by-one repairs, QMR is meant to provide a way to apply fixes remotely and autonomously, even if a system cannot boot up naturally.

The first version of QMR is rolling out now via the Canary channel of the Windows Insider program. After some initial testing, QMR will become available to additional Windows 11 users via the Dev, Beta, and Release Preview channels with a wide release to follow. The feature will be enabled by default on Windows 11 Home devices, but Pro and Enterprise users will have more control over it.

Given the havoc last year's CrowdStrike incident wreaked on the finance, gaming, and travel industries, Microsoft's introduction of QMR could indicate a willingness to learn from its past mistakes. If the feature delivers on its promise, it could save a lot of time and issues during future boot-up incidents.
