Your motherboard has a hidden storage limit that has nothing to do with gigabytes

I've come to realize that the problem with PC storage isn't capacity, it's scalability. After all, while even a small 250GB drive has its uses, no one is stopping you from buying an 8TB SSD. Sure, it'll cost a fortune, but you do you.

Most people, however, don't buy 8TB right from the get-go. For those people, solving the issue of running out of storage space was simple: no space, buy more storage. That still works, but only up to a point.

The annoying part isn't even finding more terabytes anymore. It's making sure your PC is ready for them.

Capacity is no longer the hard part

Storage has never been bigger, faster, or easier to buy. (Well, with the important caveat that it's extremely overpriced right now, but still.)

You can get multi-terabyte SSDs that fit into a tiny M.2 slot, but also enormous HDDs meant for bulk storage. You can get external drives and flash drives with more capacity between them than most people will ever need.

For most people, the limit isn't whether enough storage exists, because yes, it very much does.

That's what makes the whole thing so annoying. Running out of space feels like it'd be the easiest PC problem to fix , because the answer is so obvious: just buy more storage. Buy it, stick it into your PC, and enjoy.

If only things were truly that simple.

The trouble is that you can't always scale your storage the way you'd probably want to do. Your PC may set a hard limit on adding more storage.

The first and most annoying limit is the obvious one: your motherboard only has so many places you can stick more drives into. You might have two M.2 slots, maybe three if you're lucky, and a handful of SATA ports sitting off to the side. That sounds like plenty until you realize your boot SSD already takes up a slot, a game drive takes up another, and suddenly there's no space to add more fast storage.

To make matters worse, those slots aren't always fully independent. M.2 drives usually rely on PCIe lanes, and your CPU and chipset only have so many of those to go around.

Some M.2 slots share bandwidth with SATA ports, while others only run at slower speeds. This is the point where you can't really buy another drive without making major changes.

Even if your PC gives you enough ports and slots to keep adding storage, that doesn't mean you should keep doing it forever. At some point, the problem shifts from figuring out where to install this drive to finding your way around your files.

Having too many drives can quickly become overwhelming if you don't give them clear jobs. Even when you do, scaling up becomes hard if you don't connect them all in some sort of a network, like a NAS.

Personally, I have a lot of storage devices, and each of my drives has a dedicated job. Otherwise, the mess just spills over and becomes difficult to control. For instance, I have a so-called abuse drive , as well as a small drive entirely used for documents and personal files.

The more places your files can live, the harder it gets to know what's actually important, what's backed up, and what's just clutter and files you forgot to delete after downloading. Take it from someone whose Downloads folder looks like a disaster: there's only so many drives and files you can keep before it becomes too much.

So, what's the fix?

I'd say careful planning is, but it's not so easy now

The fix to this problem lies in careful planning, but there are a few things working against you here.

For starters, if you already have a laptop or a PC with a certain number of M.2 slots, well, you most likely won't change it for a new one just to get another M.2 slot.

Buying up more storage is pricey right now, so that's difficult to plan for, too. The best thing you can do is make the most of what you have and find new ways to repurpose older drives, even something as old as a 2.5-inch hard drive .


When in doubt, get an enclosure

Your motherboard may not have any more M.2 slots to offer, but luckily, you can still find a home for NVMe SSDs. Stick them into a USB enclosure. They won't be anywhere near as fast as they would be inside the PC, but at least you can still use them.
