Older printers are being left behind by Windows 11, but you don't need to buy a new one just yet

Byte-Sized Brief

  • Microsoft drops older Windows printer drivers.

  • Some legacy printers may stop working.

  • Two simple options remain for getting printer drivers.

Microsoft has started withdrawing printer driver support in Windows 11. Following a January update,  Windows Update  no longer supports V3 and V4 printer drivers, which are primarily used by older printers. Existing drivers can still get updates in rare cases, but only after a manual review.

This means that, over time, some printers might fail to install or stop working after Windows updates. What's the reason for the change? Security and upkeep. Older printer drivers have caused serious problems for people in the past, including print spooler attacks, and Microsoft no longer wants to manage thousands of vendor-specific drivers.

Expert Tip: Tip

You should still be able to install newer printers in Windows 11 since they use newer driver systems.

But what should you do if you need a driver for your older printer? You've got two easy options: Visit the printer company's website to download the driver for your model (it's usually free), or use a  free driver updater tool  to identify which drivers your PC is missing; some even install the printer driver for you.

Either way, you might need to learn how to install drivers manually to get your printer to work.

The Bottom Line

Windows 11 is moving away from older printer drivers, which may affect legacy printers. You can still get drivers directly from manufacturers or through free updater tools.
