Samsung Teases New Screen Substrate for Its Next Foldable: Titanium
Samsung unveiled a new approach to sharpen and strengthen the complex displays of foldable phones : making them a little more metal.
Just over a week before it will show off its latest Galaxy devices at a July 22 Galaxy Unpacked event in London , the Korean tech conglomerate today announced what it's calling Samsung Flex Titanium technology. This design, building on "seven generations of foldable innovation and engineering expertise," will deliver a more durable folding screen with a less visible crease that can use significantly less electricity, Samsung says.
Flex Titanium-based phones will embed this metal in two layers of the display. One will be a titanium-alloy film, a third as thick as a human hair, thanks to what Samsung describes as a "precision rolling process," nestled below the OLED panel. The company says this film brings 20 times more mechanical rigidity than the polymer film used before. The second layer will fit below the titanium-alloy film: a flexible titanium plate that Samsung says will bond with the display without leaving any air gaps.
"By introducing sophisticated micro-patterned holes to the folding section of the titanium plate, we have successfully secured flexibility with robust durability," says Kyung-Jin Yoo, EVP and head of the mobile display product development team at Samsung Display.
Titanium's advantages in high-performance environments aren't new—there's a reason supersonic jets use it in so many places—but its manufacturing challenges aren't new either. It's an expensive metal that is difficult to machine . Samsung has used it in some devices before, but hasn't always stuck with it: While its Galaxy S25 Ultra came with a titanium frame, the company switched back to aluminum for the S26 Ultra .
Foldable phones, however, have such tough durability requirements—ones that the first generation could not meet —that Samsung continues to employ titanium components in devices such as the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and the Galaxy Z TriFold .
Enlisting this element in more of a foldable's screen may help ease the concerns about device fragility that customers continue to voice . But it may only elevate unease over foldable-device costs that were already high before the memory and storage crisis .
