Samsung's latest portable SSDs are unbelievably fast

Samsung has launched two new super-fast portable SSDs promising incredible transfer speeds. The Samsung Portable SSD P Series consists of P9 and P7 models, both being built around a super-fast USB4 interface.
Portable SSD P9

The top-tier P9 boasts incredible read speeds of up to 4,000 MB/s and sequential write speeds of up to 3,800MB/s. This makes the P9 around twice as fast as existing USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 SSDs which max out at 2000MB/s, and it means the P9 supports 12K direct recording for professional production workflows.

The P9 is available in 1TB, 2TB, 4TB, and 8TB capacities; the latter being the world's first 8TB USB4 portable SSD. As you might imagine, this much speed doesn't come cheap, especially with today's sky-high NAND flash pricing. Expect to pay $339.99/£296.09 for the entry-level 1TB capacity, with the 2TB, 4TB and 8TB drives costing $649.99/£591.99, $1,349.99/£1,184.49, and $2,699.99/£2,342.79, respectively.
Portable SSD P7

The Portable SSD P7 shares the same capacity options as the P9, but at slightly more accessible price points of $289.99/£246.79 for the 1TB version, $549.99/£493.49 for the 2TB, $1,149.99/£986.99 for the 4TB, and $2,289.99/£1,952.29 for the range-topping 8TB capacity. Transfer speeds for the P7 have yet to be announced, but we'd expect the P7 to be only marginally slower than the P9, as it also uses the same super-fast USB4 interface.

The P7 also benefits from drop protection from heights up to 2 meters, along with shock and vibration durability. Samsung states that the P7 will offer broad compatibility with a wide range of host devices, including desktop computers, laptops, smartphones, games consoles, and cameras.
