Windows 11 Gets Permanent Opt-Out for Annoying OneDrive Backup Prompts

Microsoft has quietly rolled out a Windows 11 change that lets users permanently dismiss the operating system's incessant OneDrive backup prompts. For years, users have reported that the full-screen alerts would reappear after they selected "Remind me later" or "Skip for now," even after updates or reboots. Now, they're finally free.

The refreshed prompt includes a clearly labeled "Opt out of backup" button. This option is a real refusal instead of a snooze, stopping the repetitive full-screen prompts. The change appears on stable builds of Windows 11 25H2 and, in some cases, on 24H2, though Microsoft has not issued a formal announcement or detailed changelog entry.

Just to clarify, this change doesn't uninstall OneDrive, delete backed-up files, or change sync settings for current users. Instead, users who never wanted OneDrive tied into Windows Backup can now say so once instead of over and over.

Users can still turn off other tips and suggestions in Settings, and they can uninstall the OneDrive app if they do not use it at all.
