You're making a huge mistake leaving your backup drive plugged in
Most of my important files already exist in several places, but almost all of those places are connected to something. My PC, cloud storage, and ordinary external drives are all convenient precisely because I can reach them whenever I need something. Unfortunately, that also means I can accidentally delete something, overwrite it, synchronize a bad change, or expose it to malware.
That's why I'm setting up an SSD that's going to live most of its life offline. And yes, I'm aware of the risks.
I want a copy that my everyday mistakes can't reach
Convenient storage is also easy to change
My backups are all designed to stay current, and I'd wager that the same is true for you.
My cloud storage synchronizes changes automatically, while the external drives I use regularly are often connected to my PC. That's convenient when I need to restore something quickly, but it does expose them to various risks that they wouldn't be exposed to if I just kept them offline.
If I accidentally delete the wrong folder, overwrite an older project, or let a sync application replace the good version with a damaged one, the mistake can spread like wildfire. A connected backup may also be accessible to malware, including ransomware that searches for attached drives and network storage before encrypting everything it can reach.
The time capsule SSD avoids that problem by preserving a dated snapshot that cannot be updated in the background. Once I've copied and verified the files, I'll disconnect the drive completely. My normal backups will continue changing throughout the year, but this one will remain exactly as I left it, safely out of reach of both automated software and my own questionable late-night cleanup decisions.

When I say this SSD will stay offline, I mean physically unplugged. I know that it's not ideal , but in this case, I believe the benefits outweigh the risks.
Leaving it connected to my PC but unused would defeat much of the point, because Windows, backup software, malware, and all that jazz could still access it. Even removing its drive letter would only add a small obstacle, not create the clean separation I'm after.
Once the yearly copy and verification process is finished, the SSD will go back into a protective case and stay somewhere cool and dry, away from my main PC. That also gives it some protection from electrical problems, spills, and anything else that might damage both the PC and a backup sitting beside it.
For the rest of the year, no program will be able to update, encrypt, or delete a single file on my "time capsule" SSD.
My annual check will verify the files, not just the drive

Once a year, I'll connect the SSD and do more than confirm that my OS can see it. I'll read through the entire archive, compare the files against a checksum manifest, check the drive's health data, and manually open a selection of files.
An SSD can report that it's healthy while individual files are damaged , so simply mounting it and browsing a few folder names wouldn't tell me much.
The yearly check is also going to be my one chance to replace anything, add a new dated snapshot, and migrate the whole archive to another drive if this one starts showing signs of trouble.

I already have an SSD I'm going to use for this, but if you're trying to figure out which drive should get this job, the answer is: the one that's in the best condition.
Don't worry about things like transfer speeds. A new or lightly used drive with plenty of remaining endurance makes more sense than an old boot SSD that's already spent years handling constant writes, even if that older model was once considered high-end. Since I'll only connect it once a year, paying extra for cutting-edge performance would be pointless.
Word of warning, though: even new SSDs can fail . An SSD that's already been proven trustworthy but hasn't gone through any heavy usage is probably your best bet.

Keeping this SSD disconnected protects it from a lot of everyday threats, but it doesn't protect it from everything. The drive could still fail without warning, get damaged, disappear during a move, or simply die for no reason.
That's why the files on it will also remain on my regular backups. You should never entrust a single drive with anything you consider important; always better safe than sorry.
The SSD only works if I'll remember to check it
There's one more point of failure here that I haven't covered: you need to remember that this SSD even exists. Set yourself a recurring calendar reminder for the same date every year, then use that time to verify the files, add a fresh snapshot, update the inspection log, and decide whether the drive is still trustworthy.
