The Latest GTA 6 'Leak' Is a Scam Disguised As a Free Demo. Don't Fall for It
GTA 6 is the most anticipated new release of 2026, so scammers and leakers are capitalizing on the lack of a PC release by circulating a fake Windows demo that's actually malware .
Antivirus provider Malwarebytes discovered the malicious demo on a couple of imposter websites (gta6demo[.]eu and gta6demo[.]us) that impersonate Rockstar Games.
Both imposter sites not only advertise the upcoming "extended look" trailer for GTA 6 set to air on Thursday, but also feature a curious "Play Now" button. Clicking it will automatically download a 1.1 MB program called gta6_installer.exe, which makes it seem like a demo. But Malwarebytes examined the program and discovered it's actually Windows-based malware.
"It's an information stealer designed to take passwords stored in browsers, cookies, and authenticated sessions," the antivirus provider said. "And because stolen browser sessions can sometimes be reused without going through the normal login process, even two-factor authentication ( 2FA ) may not be enough to stop them."
Malwarebytes says the infostealing malware belongs to the Vidar strain, access to which is sold online. Both imposter sites remain up, and one has even appeared in Google Search results for queries about GTA 6 demos. Fortunately, the Chrome browser will flag the downloadable program as malicious, while 40+ antivirus providers will also detect the executable as malicious.
Still, Malwarebytes urges users to be careful when searching for GTA 6 leaks. Since last week, a group named CyberLeek has been posting fresh in-game footage apparently taken from an actual test build of the game ahead of its Nov. 19 release. Other hackers have been capitalizing on the leaks too, even pretending to release a 113GB torrent of the game that turned out to be malware.
Unfortunately, the real GTA 6 is only coming to the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S on launch day; a PC launch date has not been announced. However, CyberLeek has sparked speculation that it stole a PC build of the title, creating hope that the group will end up leaking it online. But for now, CyberLeek is trying to monetize the GTA 6 leaks by asking for shady donations .
The actual GTA 6 game is already up for preorder , and won't contain any malware.
