Starlink Offers Huge Discount for Those Living Near New Starbase Louisiana Site
SpaceX is expanding a rare 50% discount on Starlink to residents living near the company's new Starbase facility on the Louisiana Gulf Coast.
A new Starlink.com support page now mentions a Vermilion Parish Area Discount, the area where the company's upcoming spaceport will be based. "As we invest there, we are applying a 50% discount to Starlink Residential service plans for our neighbors in the area," it says.
The discount pops up when trying to subscribe to a Residential plan. If your address is in Vermilion Parish, Starlink.com will apply a 50% discount to the monthly plan. Like other US areas, the dish hardware will be a free rental with no up-front cost.
SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell teased the discount at a Tuesday event announcing the new Starbase. "And we're going to make Starlink available to everybody that wants one or needs one at far more affordable pricing even than you see online," she said.
'The Vermilion Parish Area Discount applies to Starlink service addresses in the eligible zone,' SpaceX says.
The deal slashes the price of the cheapest tier, the Residential 100Mbps plan, to $27.50 per month. But on the downside, the discount doesn't apply to the Roam plans, which let you use the satellite internet service outside your home address.
Starlink offers the same discount for residents living near SpaceX's controversial data center in Memphis, Tennessee, which has sparked noise and pollution complaints. Starbase Louisiana may face similar issues, considering SpaceX plans to eventually conduct "thousands of Starship flights a year" from the site.
However, the company is pledging to work with "state and federal agencies, landowners, and conservation groups to protect shoreline, restore wetlands, and support the wildlife" along the Gulf Coast. SpaceX also says the $100 billion Starbase will create thousands of new jobs. Construction is slated to begin next year, with the first Starship flights commencing in 2029.
As for the discount, it may not last forever. The support page notes: "The discount continues as long as your service address remains in the eligible area. Starlink may stop offering this discount to new customers at any time. If the discount ends for customers already receiving it, Starlink will give at least 6 months' notice."
