There's no need to worry about keeping warm this winter— Starz plans to add some steamy heat to the season with its resurrection of the hit gladiator series Spartacus .

Series creator and showrunner Steven S. DeKnight has returned to revive his sexy, vicious sword-and-sandal epic, and this time, we're deviating from history. House of Ashur will toss a what-if scenario into the gladiatorial arena and explore what Rome might've looked like had the villainous Asher (Nick E. Tarabay) survived Mount Vesuvius.

Is This a Sequel to Spartacus: Blood and Sand?

Yes, Spartacus: House of Ashur is a sequel to the Starz historical fiction hit series Spartacus: Blood and Sand . In particular, it will pick up following the events of Season Three, Vengeance .

In its depiction of a violent future, this revisionist premise will be intensely thrilling and erotic in its history-bending, roller-coaster experience that's firmly set to build on top of everything that made the mothership series a serious colossal hit.

What's Spartacus: House of Ashur About?

There's no doubt that Ashur was a scene stealer and because of that, he's now the series' focus. House of Ashur isn't just about what would've happened had the villain survived. It's also about how his survival might have affected history from that point on.

The 10-episode spinoff will take the twisted narrative of Ashur's survival a giant step further and place him in charge of the gladiator school, or Ludus, where he once bled and lived as a slave. His new status comes as a reward from the Romans, in praise of his treachery in killing Spartacus and ending the slave rebellion.

Ruling the Ludus that once owned him is nothing, though, compared to what it takes to survive Roman politics. That savage arena functions more as a merciless game where betrayal is a currency, but that shouldn't be a problem for Ashur, right? The series will also follow Julius Caesar (Jackson Gallagher, of Wentworth ), who, at this point in his life, is not the dictator we came to know but instead who serves as a mouthpiece for Senator Crassus, the richest man in the capital and the worst people-person on the planet. Simultaneously, Caesar will also be fulfilling his job in the Republic of maintaining the highway that leads to the city.

Caesar is important because of who he's married to—Cornelia Cinna, daughter of Lucius Cornelius Cinna, a major player in the Republic and one of the most powerful figures in Rome. Much richer than her husband, Cornelia funds his life and road to power. Her name is much bigger than his, which is especially important since we're in a brutally patriarchal society where women have no rights, and here she is, a woman with status and influence. So, who the couple is together will be a huge focus.

"For them," the showrunner notes , "sex, drugs, and destruction are their calling card. They have these vast sensual appetites that are only exceeded by their mutual thirst for power. And these two will maneuver, manipulate, and murder anyone who gets in their way."

But that's not all. Ashur will flip tradition upside down when he unleashes Achillia, a fiercely powerful gladiatrix eager to prove her worth alongside the men in Ashur's Ludus. Together, she and Ashur will ignite a new kind of spectacle that shocks, disrupts, and boldly offends the elite with every drop of blood that's shed.

With the scheming villain in charge, we're looking at a new era of gladiatorial combat, with more than enough blood and sand to go around, and some juicy, exciting twists.

The New Cast of Characters

Nick E. Tarabay is reprising his role as the magnetic yet loathsome Ashur, and Lucy Lawless will reprise her character of Lucretia in a guest role. Additionally, Spartacus: House of Ashur will feature many new faces in some super-cool roles.

First up is Tenika Davis, of Beacon 23 , who will play Achillia, our gladiatrix. She's fierce, determined, strong, and beautiful, but she's also deeply complex. She's coming into a world where she's the underdog, so she must do her best by any means necessary to survive—and thrive.

Daredevil 's Jaime Slater stars as Cornelia, Caesar's wife. She's a badass, and she's dangerous. She's cunning and manipulative with a voracious sexual appetite, so have your pearls nearby in case you need to clutch them.

Tarchon (Jordi Webber, of Head High ) is Achillia's rival at the Ludus. He's proud, arrogant, agile, and stubborn, making him a solid weapon and a fighter full of ambition. He's also built with a lot of love and softness underneath that 12-pack.

Jamaica Vaughan, of Home and Away , will play Hilara, the elevated house slave in Ashur's villa. She's deeply in love with him and respects his way of climbing the ranks of Roman society, so she lives vicariously through Ashur in terms of ambition. She's smart, knowing that if he rises, she will, too. As a result, she invests in him wholeheartedly.

Outlander 's Graham McTavish will star as layered ex-slave and gladiator Korris, who also shares ambition with Ashur to rise to the top of the Roman aristocracy.

Other new cast members include Joel Abadal ( Glow & Darkness ) as Helios, Invasion 's Simon Arblaster as Proculus, Ivana Baquero, of High Seas , as Messia, Shortland Street 's Evander Brown as Ephesius, and Daniel Bos as Balbus.

As of this publication, there is still no word on who will play Spartacus, if he even appears. If you'll remember, in the mothership series, the titular character was played by the late Andy Whitfield, who tragically passed away from cancer in 2011. Spartacus was not killed until Season Four, War of the Damned, and since House of Ashur is a sequel to Season Three, Vengeance , there's a hot chance he might appear in some fashion. Fingers crossed.

The Spartacus: House of Ashur Trailer

In July 2025, Starz released a chill-inducing trailer full of gore and lots of bloody, violent action, even including one of the biggest twists that's already inciting intrigue and criticism. You have to remember, though, that this is a what-if scenario not meant to represent historical fact, so enjoy it.

The opening of the House of Ashur trailer—no pun intended—cuts right to the action and sets the series' tone by depicting a gladiator being cut in half so brutally that his blood drenches a nearby crowd of rabid fans. We also see the arrival of the first female gladiator, who is trying to fight for her place alongside the men in Ashur's Ludus.

What's the Release Date for House of Ashur?

Spartacus: House of Ashur was initially pegged for a fall 2025 release, but Starz has since pushed that back to an unspecified winter timeframe. What we do know for certain is that the show will consist of 10 episodes and air on the main Starz Network while streaming on the Starz app.

With the mothership series, the network released one episode weekly, so it's fair to assume House of Ashur will be rolled out in the same way.

Do You Need to Watch the Original Series First?

Technically, since Spartacus: House of Ashur is a what-if scenario and not a historical continuation of events, you don't need to watch the original series. However, to fully understand the nature and depth of Ashur's character and personality, the life he lived, and the actions he took—which explain why this scenario in the sequel is so horrific—then you absolutely should watch all four seasons of this sword-and-sandal epic riddled with blood, boning, battle, and betrayal.

Spartacus originally debuted on Starz in 2010 with its first season, Blood and Sand . Prequel series Gods of the Arena followed in 2011, with subsequent seasons Spartacus: Vengeance and War of the Damned arriving in 2012 and 2013.
