Tecmo Bowl , the classic and enormously popular football video game franchise, is getting a 21st-century refresh for a feature film.
Variety reports that Tongal , a studio that’s worked with Netflix, NBCUniversal and other content brands, will collaborate with its creator community to “reimagine the beloved classic as a movie” combining live action and gameplay animation inspired by the video game.
Tongal is currently accepting submissions from design teams who want to “reimagine the 8-bit characters from Tecmo Bowl as 3D characters for the modern era.” Two teams will be selected, each tasked with developing a version of NFL legend Bo Jackson that translates the original Tecmo art style to 3D.
Bo Jackson is easily the greatest video game athlete of all time
The team that moves on will then produce modern takes on Howie Long and Lawrence Taylor, along with a background design and a reimagined Tecmo Bowl logo. Though the submission call is only for internal use in the early creative development stages, Tongal says outstanding work could translate into a “longer-term design engagement.”
