Bad News for 'The Witcher' Fans, As Development Pauses for a Highly Anticipated Entry

The Witcher 3 is making a comeback 11 years later, thanks to its upcoming free-for-existing-owners remaster and a brand-new expansion called Songs of the Past , which is releasing sometime next year to bridge the gap between The Witcher 3 and The Witcher 4 . However, a different game in The Witcher series was also in development, and development has stopped for now.

According to a report from GameSpot , the previously announced remake of The Witcher , being developed by Fool's Theory, has been put on the back burner. Fool's Theory has now shifted focus to assist in the development of Songs of the Past and The Witcher 4 , according to the report.

"Fool's Theory team is focused mainly on the development of The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past , while a relatively small part of their team is supporting the development of The Witcher 4 ," said an unnamed CD Projekt Red representative.

The message continued, saying, "As we have previously announced, the development of The Witcher Remake has been temporarily integrated with The Witcher 4 due to production process dependencies. As The Witcher Remake will be built on the foundation laid by The Witcher 4 , we need to have the necessary assets, tools, and pipelines ready for efficient development."

It seems that, as The Witcher 4 nears the end of production and is aiming for a 2028 release, all hands are on deck to finish the game in time at both CD Projekt Red and Fool's Theory.

Songs of the Past is still targeting a 2027 release and was demoed at Gamecom last week. A final release date has not been revealed yet.

Based on this new information, it seems The Witcher Remake is still quite a few years away, and will likely not be released until at least 2029.
