The versatile handheld console can be kept docked below the TV or picked up and played on the go, but unless you vow to never take it outdoors it means it's also vulnerable to the elements. Many have already reported finding scratches on theirs, so if you want to keep it pristine then you need a case to protect it against scrapes, bumps and accidental drops while you're on the move.

How to choose the best Switch 2 case for you
Budget is often the main concern when looking for a Switch 2 case. You can buy one from as little as £10, but it's worth questioning why the case is that cheap before you make a purchase. Cutting corners on protection for a £429.99 console could quickly prove a false economy.
Cost aside, it's worth reflecting on your usage. Is space usually at a premium when you travel, or do you have room for a bulkier case? Do you have a bunch of accessories like extra controllers and a camera that you need to take with you when you travel, or is the console alone enough? Do you need slots for game cartridges, or are all of your games digital?
Finally (and this is asked without judgement) are you butterfingered and prone to accidents? If you never drop things, you may be able to get away with a super thin case to minimise size. On the other hand, if you're on the clumsy end of the spectrum, you'd be better off getting something with enough padding to mitigate the risk of additional damage.
How we test Switch 2 cases
There's not much more you can do to test Switch 2 cases other than to use them as intended. That is to say, packing the Switch 2 and whatever accessories fit inside, and then assessing for style, size and weight. If there are any special features, these are also examined and then assessed for how much added value they provide.
Protectiveness is trickier, and for the purposes of this round-up, there were no drop tests involved. Not only is that an unscientific way of testing protectiveness given the inconsistency of impact, but I'm using my own personal Switch 2 for this, and I'd rather not spend my writing fee replacing the console, should the worst happen.
That said, you can learn a lot about a Switch 2 case's protective qualities by looking at the materials used, how thick they are and how snug the console fits. It is therefore pretty obvious which ones are better suited to surviving shocks and drops - I tested 11 cases in total and only six made the cut.

I tested two Stealth cases for Switch 2 and for just £5 more it's worth getting the premium version, which not only feels better built, but more importantly, packs in more space for extras.
The hard shell exterior offers decent protection against bumps and accidental drops, while the insides are soft and moulded to match the shape of your console and some key accessories. This means that not only is your Switch 2 securely held against a padded rectangle for screen protection with room for 12 cartridges, but there are cutouts for two more Joy-Con controllers and a rolled-up charging cable.
There's a loop for easy carrying, and the case zips up securely. The only downside is that it's at its most useful if you have a set of four Joy Cons you like to travel with. As the space is moulded for them, it has limited uses otherwise, so those who have opted for something else from our list of the best Nintendo Switch 2 controllers might want to look elsewhere.

Some people will be happy with a case that simply delivers the Switch 2 safely from A to B. For those who feel incomplete without the dock, extra controllers and a menagerie of extra accessories, the Hori Compact Carry Sack is the answer. As you'll see in the video below, it's a veritable clown car of a case, capable of holding significantly more than you'd think.
By default, there's dedicated spaces for the dock, Switch 2 and plug, with a compartment at the top for extras like a controller or two, but the dividers are all Velcro and removable if you want to bring something bigger in the bag.
Although the bag is on the thin side, the area for the Switch 2 itself is nicely padded, so you'd have to be pretty unlucky for a drop to do serious damage. The only real issue is that while there's plenty of room for game cartridges, there's no holder to neatly arrange them as with other cases. All the same, it's a small price to pay considering the huge amount of available space.

PowerA's entry into this list doesn't just have the joint cheapest retail price of the cases I tested, but it's also the thinnest. Although the official dimensions peg it at 45mm thick, it's actually contoured around the Switch 2's body to minimise its presence, and I measured a thickness of just 30mm at its thinnest point. A simple zip design ensures that the console will stay firmly in place until required, too.
Naturally with that level of thinness, you won't be squeezing in any extra controllers and plugs, but the soft screen protecting segment does have slots for 10 game cards, meaning you won't be short of games to play on the go. Better still, the card section can fold out to make a stand, allowing you to prop up the Switch 2 in tabletop mode should you wish.

If you like the thin design, but want something a little more vibrant, you could consider the Tomtoc slim carrying case . It's a bit pricier and marginally thicker, but it comes in a variety of snazzy colours that spotlight PowerA's more austere design.

No, the Tomtoc Sling Crossbody Bag isn't the smallest case. In fact, it's long enough to just about squeeze the larger Steam Deck games console inside. But considering the bag has enough space for a combination of eight cartridges, accessories, a Pro Controller, a power bank and the Dock without getting excessively large, it's in some ways more portable than slim cases which only have room for the console and a handful of games.
The crossbody design and its adjustable strap mean that you don't need a spare hand, though there is a handle at the top if you prefer. The material is soft, and it offers a decent amount of protection to the Switch 2, too.
All in all, this is about as compact as a case can get if you need a selection of accessories to hand as well. It's overkill if you just want to do a little light gaming on your commute, but for longer trips, it offers portability without you having to sacrifice extras.

If you're after a beautiful case that's a pleasure to interact with, then the Waterfield Magnetic Case is the pick for you. Made with your choice of leather or a vegan alternative, the case is made in batches, with each set snapped up pretty quickly. You'll need to set an alarm at the start of the day to make sure you make the cut, but thankfully, it's made in San Francisco, so that's mid-afternoon over here in the UK.
Why the enthusiasm? It's down to aesthetics and quality of components. The soft leather coating feels delightful to carry around, and the inside is nicely padded to offer protection to its precious cargo in transit. There's no zip: you just prise apart the sleeve to open it up, with strong rare-earth magnets snapping it back into place when closed.

Other than the scarcity, there are two main drawbacks. The first is the high price of $119 (£88). While the materials justify the cost, it's entirely reasonable to think this is over the top when a £15 case will perform the same job just as well. The second issue is a practical one: added storage comes in the form of two padded flaps that will hold a cable and some games, but it feels less organised than dedicated cartridge slots.

As we explain in our Switch 2 review , the console's 5,500mAh battery provides between two and 6.5 hours of charge depending on the game, screen brightness and other factors. If you're on a long-haul flight, those numbers may leave you feeling anxious, and that's where the Belkin charging case steps in.
The case comes with a 20 watt 10,000mAh power bank with its own dedicated space below the Switch 2. Belkin claims this will give the console up to one and a half full charges, extending your battery life to between five and 16 hours of gameplay. In our tests, we found that to be a little optimistic, with a charge from four per cent to 100 per cent taking four hours, and leaving 33 per cent battery remaining on the power bank.
Still, that's better than no power bank, and the case has other things going for it, including slots for 12 cartridges, mesh pockets for cables and even a hidden slot for an Apple AirTag so you can keep tabs on it, should it go missing.
For some, this case will be overkill when you could just buy one of the best power banks separately. Plus, there's no denying that the included battery adds heft, with the whole thing weighing 538g. But it's nice to have space for a battery pack, and it can be removed if you're packing light, taking the case to 322g if required.

Is there an official Nintendo Switch 2 case?
Nintendo sells two official cases: the Carrying Case for £20.99 , and the All-in-One Carrying Case for £66.99 . The latter costs more because it has space for "all equipment needed to play in TV mode", including the dock.
Reviews have been mixed, however, with both the price and stingy space for just six cartridges criticised.
Will the Switch 2 fit in Switch and Switch OLED cases?
As a general rule, no. The Switch 2 is quite a bit larger than the original and its OLED version, so you're likely going to need a new one.
The exception to this is if your Switch 1 case is more of a carry bag with plenty of extra space. If that's the case, your Switch 2 should fit in, but best to check online and see if anybody has tried first.
What should I consider when buying a Switch 2 case?
Generally speaking, when buying a case, you can either have something small and lightweight that offers minimal protection and has little space for accessories, or something bulkier that will protect against some impacts and have room for everything.
There's no right or wrong answer as to which is better. It's purely down to how you tend to use your Switch 2.
