Fight Life: Vanguard Is A Dark Fantasy Tactics RPG About Leading A Doomed Mercenary Company
Fight Life: Vanguard is a turn-based tactical RPG from StartImpulse and Two Cakes Studio that puts you in charge of a small mercenary squad trying to hold back a creeping darkness. Set in a medieval dark fantasy world on the brink of oblivion, it mixes hex based battles, character progression and light squad management, with a full campaign planned for PC via Steam and Epic Games Store, plus PS4 and PS5 versions. The game is currently targeting a Q2 2026 release window, with a free demo and Steam playtest already available.
Underneath the tactics is a high fantasy story about a forgotten deity and a failed succession. Lore texts describe a once mighty, generous god whose power is fading from the world after being betrayed by a human apprentice that tried to ascend by sacrificing their master. The Divine Spirit has little reason to trust humanity, until witnessing mortals stand against the encroaching darkness, which convinces the god to make one last attempt to save humankind before vanishing into the void.
You play as the commander answering that call, guiding a band of recruits across war torn landscapes and ruined settlements. The campaign is structured across four chapters, each pushing your squad deeper into hostile territory as the stakes rise and your choices around risk, recruitment and upgrades begin to define the fate of the realm.
Hex based tactics that turn recruits into veterans
On the battlefield, Fight Life: Vanguard focuses on deliberate, turn based encounters rather than speed or reflexes. Maps are built on a hex grid, and battles encourage flanking, positioning and coordinated abilities rather than simple stat checks. New recruits join as fragile novices, but over repeated missions you level them up, unlock new skills and gear, and transform that ragtag group into hardened specialists who can hold a line or execute complex maneuvers.
Enemy forces range from basic soldiers to darker threats such as undead minions, cultists and larger monsters, which demand different tactics and party compositions. The developers describe combat as "meticulously crafted", with each encounter designed to test both long term squad building and short term tactical decision making.
Accessible campaign across PC and console
Outside combat, most of your time is spent managing and upgrading the squad. You choose which recruits to bring, how to spend limited resources on training and equipment, and which missions to tackle as you try to push back the spreading corruption. Every upgrade choice carries weight, since losing a key veteran can dramatically shift how your team functions.
With its mix of dark fantasy storytelling, hex based tactics and a focus on nurturing a mercenary squad from green recruits into legendary heroes, Fight Life: Vanguard is positioning itself as a character driven alternative for players who love methodical strategy in the vein of classic tactics RPGs, but want it wrapped in a new world on the verge of being swallowed by darkness.
